My Coolscan V has started to refuse to drag in film. It spits it out as if it has been told to eject film via software, then rapidly blinks its green light at me.

I fear that this may be terminal, which would be more than just disappointing. It's been back to Nikon once before, about a year after I bought it - I'm not sure if they can or will still service them.

Guest Holy Moly

Andy, sorry to hear. I have the same model and it works good after some repair two or three years ago.

What about a cleaning of the transportation system and/or a fresh software installation?

Pls. keep us informed about some response from Nikon, thanks.

Edit: what about the adapter for slides? Same result?

Unfortunately, it won't scan the single slide, either. :(

My sympathy - I still keep an LS4000 for when I need it, and it's indispensable. Got it working under Windows 7 (if anyone's had problems the fix is here: Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64 - Windows 7 Forums). I had mine serviced once by Nikon in Warsaw after a lightning strike on our house blew a modem, the film scanner, + a usb flat bed scanner and two printers!) Never had to get service in the UK. Who have you contacted?

My sympathies - I hope Nikon can sort it out for you. The paucity of alternatives is a real issue for film photographers. If only a manufacturer somewhere would realise there is a lucrative gap in the market for serious amateur film scanning.

Not contacted anyone yet - it's Sunday ;)

It only happened half an hour ago. I'm wondering whether there is some dust or something inside, so I'm trawling the net for some guidance - without much success.

My sympathies Andy. I have the Nikon 9000 and I fear that one day it will give up the ghost. The prices being asked now for these machines is silly. That, rather than the much vaunted appearance of the MM, will signal the end of film for me. I might then just use my iPhone for photography ;(

Not meaning to divert the thread - but I'm in exactly the same position - that's why I'm encouraged by this, despite the delays.

Best of luck Andy - I'll probably have nightmares about this tonight, so I genuinely hope for a happy ending. Keep us posted!

The problem is there's not a whole lot of choice anymore for a replacement.

That's my concern. I have tried using the V700 this afternoon, but it's useless for 35mm

This is the kind of thing that is going to force me to go digital - which is a bit of a bummer when I have a 1 year old MP in my bag...

Mine did that about 2.5 years ago (terminal blinking light).

Leaving out the middle of the story, I eventually sent it to Nikon USA last August and it was serviced and returned in about a week. Not sure what was fixed, but it was an electronic part replacement, not simply a mechnical adjustment. Cost about $300.

_____________

A sidelight on repairs from Nikon and Canon, which I've discovered working at the retail end this past year.

The big manufacturers don't even open the packing box until they have given an estimate and received payment. The "estimate" is based not on actual examination of the product, but on YOUR description of the problem.

In the case of my 5000ED, the estimate I received said "no description of problem provided," even though I had included a packing letter with a full description - inside the shipping box. Nikon wanted that info OUTSIDE the package (in one of those transparent shipping-slip stick-on envelopes).

As for a replacement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Enlarger-bogen.jpg

Imacon is SO expensive!

Is that in comparison to the 50mm Summicron Asph, Chris ??

It's the same ownership model. Buy the best, get better results whilst you own it for 20 years and sell it for what you paid for it. Something that many Leica owners are familiar with.

But, it's not jewellery.

There's clearly activity around this device. Way to go if you can't get a fix. Imacon is SO expensive!

Im slightly put off by the Lubitel on top of the scanner in the last picture!

I thought I was buying a good brand in Nikon - great scanner while it works, but ...

Let's see what their CS say tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath.

Looks like vapour-ware at the moment.

Discussion over on RFF about the scanner, including a rep from Plustek who's explained the reason for some of the delay (I don't remember the details, but a supplier who went bankrupt possibly?) I do think it'll arrive eventually, by the look of things.
