Lens recomendations

I have an m9p with a host of lenses but no brand new leica glass, due to budget

I was wondering what Leica glass is as good as if not better in performance than the following new zeiss lenses I have which I love, but still hope for Leica glass:

I have two Zeiss lenses,

The Planer 50 mm f2 and the biogon f2 35 mm

I have also an old 90mm collapsible elmar f4 which I was looking to replace with a faster sharper lens.

Anyone recommend lenses to replace these standard of lenses?

Cheers!

The Planar is a very competent lens indeed. My recommendation is to keep it and be happy with it.

The 35mm Biogon is generally OK but not up to the Planar. I would say aim at a Summicron ASPH. The 35mm Summarit is also right up there, but you may miss that half-stop of speed.

In the case of the collapsible Elmar, which should never ever be collapsed when on the camera, the choice is obvious: The 90mm Summarit. I would say that this is the only case where a lens replacement is really unavoidable.

Remember that a change of glass will not magically make you a better photographer. You are the critical component of your photographic system. Improving one's alertness, seeing of the picture, and one's camera handling is vastly more important than what brand lenses you are using.

Are you unhappy with the performance of your lenses? The Planar is definetely as good as the current Summicron(not yesterday's new kid on the block), the Biogon is really not bad at all. In case you really want another 35mm, I would get a Summarit which price/performance wise is unmatched.

Why not look at different focal lenghts instead like the fantastic Super- Elmar 21/3.4 and or the great Tele- Elmar 90/2.8, which you will find used at a very reasonable price. This would complement your current set up very nicely at a somewhat reasonable cost and allow you to find out for yourself whether it has to be Leica glass in all cases or not. Take your time and have fun....
