Recently I came up with a Elmarit-M 21/2.8 ASPH (11135) with serial number 388xxxx. I noticed that the rear flange area is somewhat different to those sample I found on web.

The following is the photo showing the rear flange of my copy and the web sample. The rear barrel finish is clearly thicker on my copy. It looks like using different material to other part of the body as well. You can also see the aperture inscription very close to the edge of the brushed metal finish compare to the web one.

May I know if it is normal during the production period for this variation, or in fact the rear area of mine had actually been altered / replaced by someone else? Anyone as similar rear edge as mine?

Oops... by the way, is that normal for the focus ring turning past the 0.7m marking?

Thanks a lot.

I cannot comment on the mount variation, except to note that such purely manufacturing modifications are extremely common, but focusing to (slightly) inside 0.7m is very common and normal. Actually, with modern M cameras, the rangefinder arm does not come to a dead stop exactly at 0.7m.

My Elmarit-M 21 and 24 Asph are the same as yours.

They are? What are their serial numbers? I have an Elmarit-M 24 mm Asph (serial number 380xxxx), and it looks like the sample 'apoon204' found on the web, i. e. the 2nd in his picture above.

So it seems there are (at least) two physically different barrel versions for the wide-angle Elmarit Asph lenses indeed. That's interesting, but I don't think it means anything from a user's standpoint. Still I'd like to know what the rationale behind the change was ...

Yes please show me more pictures of it. Thanks a lot.

My 21 and 24 Elmarit M asph are the same as yours I'll post a few pics later

Just for you guys more information, The sample I found on web has the serial starting 400xxxx. And one of my friends has a 3rd sample which has the same rear edge as the web one, with serial 378xxxx.

So together with my copy which has serial 388xxxx, I wonder if there had been some changes in design during a short period of time because of parts shortage or something else?

Thanks a lot.
