Moving more and more towards the M9.

On my M8 I have a leica 18mm SE with I use with the plastic leica 24mm finder.

Since it would be the first time I have such a wide angle lens (never had a wider lens than 24mm before) I'm not that sure if I will like it and I don't want to buy extra things for a lens I might sell. Besides my money will be pretty much be gone after the M9.

So a 18mm finder is out of range right now.

Can the 24mm finder be used for the 18mm with using the entire frame instead of the lines? If not, is it far off?

I am not sure about the 24 external VF that you have, but when I look at the full image (not the frame lines) on my Leica 21 external VF (12025) and compare the scene with my Leica Universal Finder the image is approx. that of the 18mm. So my guess is your 24mm VF should give you a full field of view around 20 or 21mm. IMHO this, combined with the LCD on the M9, will get you pretty far down the road, at least until you decide if this is a lens you want to keep.

FYI, I love the 18SEM on the M9 and feel that using ultra wide angle lenses is a major advantage of the full frame sensor. Good luck!!!

Great truth...as a M8 user I decided to "skip" M9... but I hope one day I'll be able again to "use my 21 as a 21"... :o

About the question of using the 24 VF for 18 in FF... I thinks it depends a lot on the scenes one is taking... in general my impression, when one shots in interiors or street or anyway not much "open and uncrowded" environments is that is easy that with a WA you often find "something disturbing" at edges/corners... a VF of good precision has an importance of its own; by the other side, I also know a pair of pro reporters that typically use WAs because "you get into the event and don't risk to lose some side detail", but that's a different matter than for amateurs... one of those reporters, btw, told me few days ago that is planning to switch from D700 to D800 just for the reason that, with its 36mp, he'll have lot of crop to play with, so will be able to use only his favorite lens (a Nikkor zoom.. 14-24 or so, iirc) in many assignements.
