johnbuckley Posted May 8, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted May 8, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) So Thorsten Overgaard extends the world's longest M9 review with a new M10 chapter. leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leica M9 Digital Rangefinder Camera - "Leica M10 and other What if issues ..." Â He may, or may not, know more than is speculated upon both in this forum and on sites like Leica Rumors. What he does do is offer an intelligent rationale for why Leica would consider an M9 Monochrome. And he leans into things like a 35mm Nocti in a way that, as Dr. Pavlov could have predicted, causes saliva gland overdrive. Â It's fun, written with love and admiration for Leica. Read it and enjoy it for what it is: an announcement-eve scene setter that will appeal to the genuine Leicaphile perhaps more than those ready to pounce on feature analyses. rosuna Posted May 8, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted May 8, 2012 "Leica Camera seem to have realized this recently, and that is why we can expect that Leica will treat the Leica M as their crown jewel and try to expand from it." Â "What is more likely is that Leica Camera, apart from a Leica M10 that feels like a Leica M9-P, will develop other types of cameras from the Leica M platform." Â "If this is how Leica Camera sees the world, as many as possible of their new ideas and ambitions should center on the Leica M feel, philosophy of simplicity and the Leica M bayonet mount." Â I hope and wish that is true... Â M mount... and 24x36 format... Leica format. Â (Does Thorsten von Overgaard knows something or is just pure speculation?). lars_bergquist Posted May 9, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted May 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mr Overgaard does agree with me (yes, I stated this first, in this forum, so it is he agreeing with me and not the other way) that Leica will present a new camera line with M bayonet but with a different finder system. Â But the idea that Leica will re-invent the camera is unfounded. Existing technology can be applied in new ways, but Leica can't invent new technology. Leica do not research and manufacture their own sensors, for instance. Whatever is available to Leica will by definition be available to everybody else with the money. Â Also, the laws of nature are what they are. Most Leica optics is leading-edge, but not miraculous because miracles and free lunches do not happen. This makes some of Mr Overgaard's speculations look just faintly silly. For instance, what would it take to auto-focus a 90mm lens by moving the sensor instead of the lens? Exactly as many millimeters as it takes to move the lens. Focusing a 90mm lens from infinity to one meter takes 11mm of extra extension. But mind you, that extra extension would not extend forward, as now, but to the back. That would require the camera body to be 11mm deeper. Oh well ... Â Add to this the refractory fact that the end user is an animal that evolved into its present bipedal, bidextrous, binocular and five-fingered self in the African bush more than two million years ago, and will not evolve more digits or high-res eyes before the next quarterly report. Or even before the next annual one. And that hairy animal holds the cash. Â So the new camera line will have a M bayonet with some new electrical contacts. It will gradually acquire some new AF lenses. It will have a present-best-quality EVF with workable focus confirmation all over the finder image, but again, it will not be miraculous. And the new camera will have a lot of M DNA and feel. Â And again, it will not be 24x36mm. Â Whether it will be the M10 or the new line that will be presented tomorrow May 10 is anybody's guess. But mine is that it will not be a black-and white M9. The next 36 hours will reveal me as either a sensible analyst or a complete idiot. Well, it could also reveal Herr Kaufmann a complete idiot, but I would not bet on that, you know. Â The old man from the Kodachrome Age
giordano Posted May 9, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted May 9, 2012 Mr Overgaard suggests that lens designers at Zeiss, Nikon and Canon just follow "the industry standard optical text-book written by Prof. Max Berek". This is risible; I can't see much point in reading further.
