Dreadnought

Yes, that's Dreadnought, the Sanders brothers modified T Mk. 20 Hawker Sea Fury with a P&W R-4360 "Corn Cob" engine (28 cylinder). Hawker only built the Sea Fury with the Bristol Centaurus engine, but being a sleeve valve design it has proven difficult to find parts for and expensive to maintain. Because of this many Sea Furies have been re-engined with the Wright R-3350WD, which is of similar size to the Centaurus. What the Sanders boys have done here is modify the cowl to accept this gargantuan engine. The plane next to Dreadnought is Argonaut, which has an R-3350WD engine.

Many of the Sea Furies in existence today came out of Iraq in the late 1970s. They had been sold by Hawker in the late 1940s, and as the Iraqi Air Force transitioned to jets the Sea Furies were parked in the desert. Many were restored in the 1980s, including the one I flew.

A wonderful airplane, and the fastest propeller fighter ever built.
