New Leica plant in Portugal

Leica has been making many parts and accessories in Portugal for a while, though it looks like they are expanding both in Wetzlar and Portugal. For example the Motor M that I sometimes use with my M7 was made in Portugal several years ago (c. 2004).

for the euro to survive, germany needs to move more and more production facilities into the southern tier of europe. those nations need to reform regulatory and labor practices to make it practical to locate plants in those nations. it would not surprise me to see leica continue to grow its portugal facilities in the years to come likely leaving only the highest margin/value add products to be built in germany from start to finish.

This comes as news to this newbie. And here I thought "Made in Canada" was for old stuff and that all else was made in Germany since the retail prices reflect German engineering and German hand assembly costs, not German engineering and Portuguese hand assembly costs.

So what current M products are finished off in Portugal? Any ideas, since everything new that I have purchased in the last 2 years say "Made in Germany".

They are finished in Germany. Leica Portugal makes half-products like castings for the bodyshell, and pre-assemblies that get made into complete cameras in Solms.

The milling of the castings, and the top and bottom are done in Wetzlar, the electronic assembly is done by Jenoptik, possibly in Munich, the American sensor is made somewhere in Asia on Dutch machines, etc.. It is a globalized world. But in the end, the Made in Germany label is justified.
