jonoslack Posted March 4, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi There - My WATE arrived on Friday (quite unexpectedly, with no word from Solms). Presumably, although they forgot to tell me it was coming they won't forget to bill me! Â A rash moment meant that I also got a 90mm macro-elmar - which is backfocusing a little, but I think I'm still going to hang on to it, it's such a nice little lens, and sharp as a pin, although maybe not as contrasty as some lenses (good for me, it'll mostly be used for good lighting). Â I'm now set up with a lightweight travel kit of the two tri-elmars, the 90mm elmar. I need a low light lens (currently I only have CV or the 50mm 'cron) - but I can't decide which to get! Â Anyway - we had a couple of hours of unexpected sunshine yesterday afternoon, and I managed to grab a few shots - I didn't have lens detection on all the time, so the exif information is a bit odd. Â here is a link to the shots: Â twolenses - Page 1 Â They were all taken using DNG with the new firmware and processed in Aperture using Eoin's hack. Â The WATE is really a thing of wonder - I love the close focusing, and the ugly rangefinder is wonderful. for those who can't be bothered with the link, here are a couple of examples: Â Â Â and here is one with the macro elmar - the cat had just seen some blue-tits on the feeder outside and was considering whether to make an unprovoked attack: Â Â On Tuesday we're off to the french alps for a ski trip - hopefully these new lenses will get a real try out then. farnz Posted March 4, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 4, 2007 Jono, Â Some impressive Sussex skies there and images so sharp I nearly cut myself! I particularly like your Throne Room window. Â The WATE's images look excellent but does the behemoth viewfinder make a worthwhile difference? Â Pete.

Hi Peter The behemoth viewfinder is wonderful - beautiful? no, I was expecting to make a small profit on it selling it on ebay and go back to the 21-24-28 viewfinder. But it's really splendid - the barrel distortion is considerable, but the bright lines are very accurate, and the bubble level in the viewfinder is really really useful (it's tough to get things straight with an ordinary viewfinder).  Pity it's not prettier, but it's definitely a must.  Here's another I was pleased with:
kidigital Posted March 4, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 4, 2007 How am I supposed to resist using my discount on the WATE with images like that? Â I especially like the last one. Â Kurt
marknorton Posted March 4, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 4, 2007 Resistance is futile... it's a great lens.
farnz Posted March 5, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 5, 2007 Thanks, Jono. Â That's a real 'Chicken Licken' sky! May one enquire whether it's East Sussex or West Sussex? Â BTW, if someone from Manchester is a Mancunian and from Liverpool is a Liverpudlian what's someone from Sussex known as? (Sussexian doesn't seem to fit.) Â Pete

(Sussexian doesn't seem to fit.)  Pete Ah - who can say. These skies are, in fact, from Suffolk - actually, come to think of it, they're a mixture of Norfolk and Suffolk (we live right on the border).  I dont think that such people are called Norfolkians, or Suffolkians come to that - I could think of some other names

Kurt HI Kurt Resistance IS useless. I might have waited for this lens, but not wanting a noctilux, it seemed to offer the largest saving! Seriously, I'm very pleased to have it. farnz Posted March 5, 2007 Share #9  Posted March 5, 2007 Doh! 'Pologies, Jono, - obviously read Sussex for Suffolk.  Now where'd I put that book on how to read ... ?
EH21 Posted March 5, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted March 5, 2007 That last image is fantastic!
Jamie Roberts Posted March 5, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted March 5, 2007 That last image is fantastic! Â Yes, it is. Though Jono's shot are all fantastic (yes, even the cat, but I'm a cat person, even with my dog!). Â Jono--that last sky looks like some of the strangest weather ever. Was there any? I mean, beyond the daily rain and sun I remember getting in England when I was there (here we tend to get weather systems that roll in a stay for a week or two. You know--a week of sun, then a week of rain. Currently, we're in the "spring is coming so we're going to give you the most snow and freezing rain possible" month here...) Â I guess you're finding the WATE fast enough, too?
