V Lux 3

I am extremely happy with the M9P and the M7. But then sometimes I would wish a telephoto. With this in mind I am seriously considering the VLux 3. Ok, smaller sensor

etc but have seen a thread and image quality looks very good plus it is a compact

unit at a very reasonable price. And might serve well when that odd photo required.

Seems not to have much of a following in this forum, however.

Any comments and opinions are welcome.

Thanks

I borrowed a V Lux 2 to accompany my D2 to Antarctica and NW Argentina in January since my DMR/R8 and favorite lens were not back from servicing in time. For the most part I felt the camera did very well, but I had two frustrations with it:

1. It's low light performance was inferior to my D2.

2. Manual focus was almost impossible to do.

On top of that there were the minor annoyances of having to use menus instead of analog controls, and the zoom was powered rather than manual.

The V Lux 3 has a new sensor with fewer mega pixes, which might overcome my objection to its low light performance. I have no idea if manual focus on the new camera is reasonably possible to do. If that too is improved I'd give serious consideration to buying one in spite of the power zoom and menu controls.

Here are some sample V Lux 2 photos from that trip:

Stuart, although I am not in the market for one, thank you for posting these pictures. I had thought it would appeal to a son-in-law who needs a wide ranging zoom in a compact package for flying/travel pictures. It looks quite capable with improvements in the latest version.

Due to the near impossibility of focusing manually the whale tail photo was very difficult to achieve -- I would guess at where the whale would next surface, try to get the autofocus to focus on that spot, hold it with a shutter button half-press, and then hope. Another lack of easy manual focus situation happened when shooting through a window in our cabin to sea life outside. Autofocus would usually insist on focusing on the glass, at least when the camera wasn’t perfectly aligned with the glass, but maybe even then. Other than that, and the relative low-light performance of the V Lux 2, I rather liked the camera and results. It also has fairly good video performance, which I used to get wildlife behaviors in motion. I have recommended the camera to several people looking for something like what your son needs.
