Paul J Posted April 16, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted April 16, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wondering if anyone has tried more than one filter on a Noctilux 0.95 and if they found the filters to cause vignetting? Â Thanks
Advertisement Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Hi Paul J, Take a look here Will a Noctilux 0.95 Vignette with 2 filters?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ldhrads Posted April 16, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted April 16, 2012 I made the mistake of putting an ND on top of a UV. There was some vignetting. Not horrible though.
Paul J Posted April 16, 2012 Author Share #3 Â Posted April 16, 2012 Thanks just the answer I was looking for. I was hoping to stack 2x 3stop ND's rather than use a 6 stop.
Paul J Posted April 16, 2012 Author Share #4 Â Posted April 16, 2012 While I'm at it has anyone used a 60-62mm step up ring on a Noctilux? I would like to use it with a single filter and wondered if it will cause vignetting.
gravastar Posted April 16, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted April 16, 2012 I have found a problem similar to vignetting when using very dense filters with the Noctilux. Due to the thickness of the filter glass oblique light rays are attenuated more than light that hits the filter normally (straight on). With low filter factors this isn't noticeable but it can be a problem with an ND3 1024x filter. For example 10% variation from center to edge of a 2x ND 0.3 is a little less than 1/10 stop whereas the same variation with a 1024x ND 3.0 is 1 stop and very visible. Also some dense filters tend to have a warm color cast which when removed leaves the edges of the image warmer than the center. Â Bob.
jaapv Posted April 17, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted April 17, 2012 Thanks just the answer I was looking for. I was hoping to stack 2x 3stop ND's rather than use a 6 stop. The negative effects of filters on image quality may be very small, but if you stack filters you multiply them....
Double Negative Posted April 17, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted April 17, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why wouldn't you just get a 3 and a 6 stop ND? I can see stacking what you happen to have on hand, but again - why 2x 60mm 3-stop NDs then? Doesn't seem to add up.
Paul J Posted April 17, 2012 Author Share #8 Â Posted April 17, 2012 I have a 10 day job in Thailand on friday. Trying to find B+W E60 filters in stock is nigh on impossible! I thought I had only found 2x 3 stops but I had a stoke of luck this morning and found a 6 stop so I can run with that now. Phew. Â Bring on the magic! Paul J Posted April 18, 2012 Author Share #9 Â Posted April 18, 2012 Filter arrived today I'm surprised to find even with one filter a slight amount of vignetting.
Double Negative Posted April 19, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted April 19, 2012 Ahh, that makes sense. Â Are you sure it's the filter causing it? The lens does vignette quite a bit wide open even without... I'm using an "old school" B+W #103 myself (with the fat frame) and didn't notice it; but I wasn't really looking for it either.
