johnbuckley Posted March 2, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) This may be very basic, and no doubt I am missing something, but I don't understand how, once I have loaded a DNG file into my Library, and begun working on it in the Develop module, the original file is preserved. It sure seems to me like the file is continually changed. Is it that I have merely to go into the History module within Develop and undo what I've done, in order to get it back to its original state? Or am I missing something: some copying I am supposed to have done earlier in the workflow? As an aside, I continue to be delighted by Lightroom. To have at one's fingertips, as it were, tools that within Photoshop proper I have to go through multiple steps to get to (straighten, blemish removal, etc.) is wonderful. But if someone can walk me through how the DNG file is not altered permanently by the Develop editing, I'd appreciate it.

johnbuckley Posted March 2, 2007 Author Share #2 Posted March 2, 2007 Oh shoot, think I just figured it out... You just hit Reset and it's restored to its original state. Right?
heninger Posted March 2, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 2, 2007 Oh shoot, think I just figured it out... You just hit Reset and it's restored to its original state. Right? Yes. All your changes are just a "recipie" for how to interpret (or develop if you will) the file. The underlying DNG file contains those develop settings Those settings are just saved in the metadata of the file. You can jump back and forth thru each step in the History panel. johnwolf Posted March 2, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 2, 2007 John, Not sure what's happening technically, but Lightroom's edits are non-destructive. DNG data is not actually modified, but only presented based on your edits. Basically, your edits create and store metadata instruction sets that are applied when the image is opened. Only when you save as a jpg, tif, etc. are they physically applied to the saved file. Glad you're enjoying it so much. Have you compared it to the new ACR? johnbuckley Posted March 2, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted March 2, 2007 Wade, John: makes sense. Thank you. And I have not been using ACR prior to this; used C1 mostly. I find C1, once you get the hang of it, excellent, and Jamie's profiles worked like a charm. But Lightroom works well for me. Cheers, JB
