The bbb-e (bare bones bag - evolution) is a bag I really like, and I have plenty of them!

It can hold camera and lens, plus 2 more lenses (4 if stacked), and batteries and cards.

Very small, only 450 gr weight. Waterproof. Unconspicous.

Here is a picture of it:

The top handle is a very nice feature.

My City Explorer Scout is fantastic protection for my M9-P and several lenses.

I looked at their web site and saw the bag you describe. Looks nice except I will not buy a bag where the interior is not pictured since I must have a very good feel for what it will hold by showing a fairly explicit photo of it empty and a similar photo of it with gear inside.

Lou, at the risk of being dragged over the coals by RickLeica for participating in yet another bag thread I want to stress that the Wotancraft Scout is by far the best constructed, most versatile camera shoulder bag I have ever seen. Here's why...

I wouldn't normally carry four lenses in a shoulder bag, but it makes for a good illustrative example of what the Scout can hold. 90 Elmarit-M, M9+35 Summilux FLE, 50 Summilux ASPH and 18 Super Elmar. The waxed canvas is extremely water repellant and the bag features a full zippered top enclosure as well as an outer flap with two leather straps that attach to metal lugs. Front pockets are deep and can hold glasses, phones, etc.

Here you can see that everything fits easily and I could add more items, such as another lens in a pouch, above the lenses already placed in the bag. The zippered compartment that runs along the top is perfect for holding extra batteries and SD card holder.

The real beauty of this bag is the removable padded insert. This insert is extremely well made, although I'm not sure about the waterproof statement. The zippers are in fact sealed, so I would be very comfortable with a "water resistant" claim. I have often traveled with this insert in my rolling carry-on, leaving room in the Scout bag for items to access on long flights (books, iPad, Valium, etc.).

I often use this bag without the insert, and add a lens or two with their protective leather pouch. This leaves an enormous amount of room for a 13" Macbook Air, umbrella, wife's shopping...more shopping...well, you get the idea. The bottom of the bag has some padding, but without the insert protection is limited. I would not carry my M9 inside the bag without the insert, but since I'm holding it most of the time anyway it's not really an issue for me when I remove the insert and go "commando".

Finally the strap included with the Wotancraft Scout is one of the widest and most comfortable I have ever used. It's extremely non-slip, and although I prefer to wear the strap across my chest I feel confident when I just have it on one shoulder.

Stephen-Thanks ever so much. They should hire you to show them how to market a product properly!

That is some bag and I must say I especially like the "safety compartment" approach to the inner pouch. Most do not have zippers for the pouch. Like you say remove it, put it into your roller carry on and you have a great extra carry on. If it holds a 13" Air all the better. I am contemplating getting a 13" once a new one comes out since I find my 11" is great for cramped airplane seating, but when reviewing photos in LR I feel the 13" would be better instead of having to constantly scroll up and down to view an image.

The 13" Macbook Air will just fit (straight up, not angled) with the top zipped closed. The 11" Macbook Air fits easily, even with the insert installed. I recently upgraded to the 13" and find it's much easier for editing (eyes are not getting any younger!!!).

The safety compartment statement is really accurate, as you can zip the insert closed, then zip the top cover closed, then secure the flap with the leather straps. It's like a waxed canvas Pelican case.

I also use the Billingham M bag and really like it, but it holds my M8 and four lenses, along with a small flash, several filters and some cleaning materials. I think that's larger than what you indicated you want.

When carrying just my M8 and one lens, along with a few accessories, I use the Lowepro Nova Micro, which is very small and very well made. It's pictured here with the M8 and 35. The front pocket would easily hold a wallet and keys. The bag is also weathertight and very well padded.

I have two Domke FX5b bags. They are (relatively) cheap, strong, and nondescript. Doesnt scream "camera bag".

The main compartment fits a camera and one lens. The two other compartments fit either extra lenses and wallet/keys/binoculars/sunglasses.

Absolutely perfect for travelling.

Also has an extra long and strong strap so you can put it over your sholder. Clips are metal, so any potential thieves are going to take a while to cut over the 2" wide canvas strap and steel rings. Extra strong zipper and flap covered with a strong velcro.

When I found it I was so afraid it would get discontinued that I bought two... So now I have a backup.

"The Bag" was a well regarded photojournalists' camera bag commissioned by Eddie Adams before he was killed in Vietnam. It was modeled from our medic's bag, but in leather with heavy zippers and a bit smaller.

I've been trying to convince our local leather guy to make one. So far all I've managed is a ballistic-like nylon version that's too small for all but one, perhaps two M bodies and lenses.

Very cool. The site you pointed to is - like, gag me with a spoon!

.

Just a note: Eddie Adams died September 19, 2004 in New York City from complications of Lou Gehrig's disease, according to Wikipedia. Luckily Mr Adams survived Vietnam and started the Eddie Adams Workshop in 1988 which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year according to the workshop's website.

I am going to on vacation(Indonesia) and would like to get my new M9-P and one 35mm lens. I do not have bag yet and would like to get one which could hold Leica, wallet and keys. I'm looking for advice, any suggestions?

For a first post you really know how to open a can of worms :D

Welcome to the forum.

Stephen, do you know if that insert is available as a single item, without the bag?

Thank you!

I must be confusing Adams with another Vietnam PJ. Thank you for the correction.

I am also looking for a small messenger style camera bag for my future M9. Lowepro Exchange Messenger Bag seems to be the right size and style plus it is inexpensive compared to other ones mentioned in this thread. The only problem is the lack of sufficient padding. I wonder if a padded insert can be found to fit this bag.

The ThinkTank Retrospective range is truly excellent - the smallest is perfect for an M9 outfit with various extra bits and bobs. Designed by photographers, like all their products, and it really shows.

Is this the model 15 or 10 you are mentioning? I see the model 5 is for rangefinders. The Wotancraft Scout's interior is a bit roomier than the Model 5's interior.

Manolo, let me know too as I will order an extra one when placing my Scout order, thanks to Stephen's very helpful photos.

I followed your suggestion, Stephen, and asked Wotancraft. They don't sell the insert separately. But they are making a new model, the MKII, that will be ready in june. They will send me one. I'll inform you!

Cheers,

Manolo
