I just purchased the new lux 1.4. I loved the former 1.4 but it took 3 frames to say "wow."

Interesting. What do you see the difference(s) as being? I have the non-FLE and love it - some have said the rendering/bokeh of the FLE isn't actually as nice - clearly you think differently.

Because you cant shoot any of the other lenses at f1.4.

So you'd buy an f1.4 only knowing how it shot at f4 then ?

Sounds like comparing HP at 4,500 rpm when one revs to 8,500 and the other 6,500. One has been designed around high revs.......

No, of course not, I'd like to see how it compared wide open against other f1.4 lenses - of which there were none on test. For the kind of test here (bland scenery, infinity focus) a level playing field is required, and therefore an aperture shared by all contestants.

Otherwise, to extend your analogy, you're trying to compare handling at 100mph among a group of cars where only one can go that fast.

I am all for 35mm comparisons, and have used and owned the 35mm Cron MkIV, Cron asph and the 35mm Pre FLE summilux.

Reid Reviews and Ken Rockwell amongst others has shown the corner, centre accuracies as well as focus shift, there is another comparison on this site of the three I owned on the M8.

As the OP asked for comments, my comments would still be the same, f4 for a 1.4 doesn't tell me very much and the comparisons for centre and edge sharpness already exist. I personally want to know a little more about the lens characteristics when shooting, but that's just me

Agreed it's not the most interesting or ground-breaking of tests, but it all adds to the knowledge out there.

In some respects I think for true fanatics the only option is to buy all the relevant candidates and see what works for you. The downside to this approach (as I have posted elsewhere) is that you can end up with more than one lens of a given focal length (e.g. 75 Lux and 75 Cron) and find yourself unable to sell either......

I do keep wondering if building a group of Leica buddies not too far away where lens swapping and borrowing would be possible, a week or even two with a lens swap would be great ;)

Even more interesting if the choice was different for different reasons
