New Raw converter test

I hope this certainly helps folks with there experimentation with these files and some of these raw converters , now i will admit Jamie and I are extremely picky here but with C1 try Jamies and Edmunds profiles these are very good and remember LR and ACR are red so make and fine tune that out and make your presets to rid that in the programs. get a good base to start than tweak to what you like and your eye. Also if your going to play skin tones are the toughest and reason why i have been showing portraits only for this stuff because this is the most critical area we face. Lanscapes some of this won't matter for a hill of beans but fashion, portraits and stuff where critical color counts than you need to be able to use your raw converter for critical work. 15 years in digital and i still learn everyday, so just keep plugging away. Thanks for all the input folks

HI Guy

Whilst I agree that skin tones are the most critical, there are also issues with reds and greens in landscapes - and also with moire in fine detail. I've found that the detail from lightroom is stunning - but at the cost of lots of artifacts, and the green is unbelievable. The lower saturation inherent in the Aperture conversions still shows more detail than C1, but with far less sparkly artifacts in high contrast areas.

So - you see, the colour issue may be most critical for skin tones (I quite agree), but there are other things which come into play with landscape stuff, where, for me at least, the Adobe conversions are too 'brutal'!

I'm afraid I also find the Aperture conversion of our lady to be the 'kindest' to her skin, without actually losing anything.

Whilst this discussion is obviously useful, it seems that most of the subjective differences we can see are likely to be as a function of our browsers and monitor calibration rather than of the actual qualities of the conversion.

Still, it's clear to see that all of these options are capable of coming up with the goods.

RawDeveloper with its own color profile for the M8 (Jamies' profile doesn't work well in RawDeveloper, as shown by Christopher sample...).

+0.4 exposure, 5000 K White Balance with 0 color correction.

Well, here's my version. Aperture. Nothing complicated, just a litte extra saturation.

Guy you know best what her skin and lipstick look like. This seems pretty natural to me.

All very informative. Thanks. I'm sticking with LR.

Aside; what's causing that dark streak which starts from her R eyebrow and runs down over her cheek?

Thanks again.

Hans that one looks good too.

Dark streak must be a shadow there is a back hair light but will check this out

I did notice on the higher ISO the noise in LR is a little more noticable

This is Sol Irvines presets that he made for LR , so i tried it out on this image

here are his settings that he posted

For what it's worth, I have now identified my personal one-size-fits-all preset settings for importing to Lightroom. My in camera settings are all "standard", except I shoot at between 0 or -1 EV depending on the situation.

1. Neutral Brightness. All my images were importing too bright. This is why all the reds were looking pink to me. The brightness slider was at +25 or something as a default. Now it's at 0 in my preset.

2. Neutral Contrast. Same deal here. I had to slide contrast down to 0 (which is not the center of the slider, BTW).

3. - 21 Saturation. Works for me. YMMV.

4. + 40 Red Primary Hue. Maybe it's just me, but it works.

5. +30 Red Primary Saturation.

6. +30 Green Primary Hue.

7. +38 Green Primary Saturation.

8. -36 Blue Primary Hue.

9. +5 Black Clipping. Alright, this one is almost purely an aesthetic choice.

10. Neutral Noise Reduction (both types).

11. +30 Sharpening.

12. Auto WB.

Obviously some of these are subjective, but it's a way better starting point than the overbrightened pinkish yellowish image coming out of the camera.

Than i went to -9 on saturation instead of the -21 and i think this looks very nice. Really have to watch the saturation slider it does major adjustments

Aperture looks best to me from the examples above. Guy, I agree my Lightroom preset needs more saturation in this case.

No one used ACR 4.0 so I thought I would give it a try. All I did to the image was reduce the white balance to 4800K and use 5 points of vibrance

Looks pretty good to me.

This is all fascinating, and I'm glad there are options out there. I like that last aperture conversion too; it does look very good.

You can obviously tweak all of these, too, though I agree with Jono that the greens need to be tweaked still in a lot of the converters (particularly C1).

But I've seen enough of 1.091 to know they're playing with colour rendition, so I'll wait for a full firmware release to mess around some more.

Here’s another quick conversion using Raw Developer. I selected the RDv162 Leica M8 wB+W IR LoSatMatrix profile and adjusted the exposure by +1/3 EV.

No, this was viewing the converted TIFF at 100% in Photoshop.

Wow!

Ian--I don't see anything like moire at 100% in Photoshop--nothing at all, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

Care to post a 100% crop?

Talk about your totally different experience! What noise settings are you using in C1?

Hi Guy,

I think the reds (and especially the kind of reds you find in lips) are off. You can easily see that in the upper picture. The reds in Aperture (again, look at the lips and skintones) are way more natural. Not because i am such a wizzard with Aperture, but it's just good straight out of the box.

Interimmanager,

No disrespect intended, but are you sure your monitor is calibrated right?

Yes Hans i keep looking at that and i did one in Aperture also. I'm going back and forth between what I like and don't . Starting to see this women way to many times.LOL

Here is my Aperture One. Honestly i think there all good on different things. Hell this is making it even harder than helping. But still a great excercise and getting these programs the way you want. But i like what we have been doing
