beautiful natural places like this make can paradoxically make my thoughts turn to the melancholic: the alchemists of old searched for the philosophers stone, variously giving themselves mercury poisoning concocting toxic brews or blaspheming against God torturing toads and the like wee beastie... and all to aught. But perhaps it is was out there all along, a natural wonder embodied in the form of a plant, a mushroom or beetle? The secret of eternal life...a scientific wonder... and perhaps a bulldozer has already crushed it  I hope not...

These shots are from the Otway Ranges in Victoria, Australia. The area is now a National Park but it was logged heavily in earlier days. Trees (and ferns) in the area grow to enormous sizes. The park is a reminder of how rich and abundant the area must have been before white settlement- the surrounding countryside has been cleared and turned over to agriculture. It is a tragedy really: to replace such incredible natural bio-diversity with pasture and wood lots... billions of years of evolution deemed economically redundant and scrapped in just a few hundred years. I am sure humans will live to regret bitterly the decisions and value judgements we have made in recent history...
