Just Bought an X1

I just purchased an X1 after having an opportunity present itself, brand new never registered. it came with a Leica viewfinder and a handgrip and one of those pop open lens covers. Also the fellow had a fancy alligator leather case made for the camera which is not for my type of shooting.

I have trolled the L-camera site learning what I could about the X1 and the various arrangements owners have made for the camera.

I bought an Artisan case for my wife's new DL5 very pleased.

The Artisan case for the X1 does not fit with the Leica hand grip. I just returned from Dale labs and the Leica thumb grip with the Leica handgrip is an excellent set-up. I attached the viewfinder to the thumb grip.

Is that enough protection as the bottom plate of the hand grip encompasses the bottom of the camera. I know now how important that is as my D2 bottom plate is pretty scuffed up over the years from attaching to tripods etc.

Camera did not come with a neck strap.

Any comments please.

I have seen here that some have bought a Kiwi barrel tube extension with hood and UV filter.

Is the protection this offers out weighs the added size of the camera?

My question to you is what do you recommend? I like the idea of a half case and the Leica handgrip is better than the one built-in to the Artisan half case. Or do I sell back the handgrip and go with the Artisan case?

Does the barrel extension appeal to you?

My D2 has a hood and UV filter protection. I am not a studio photographer the reason I gravitated to the X1 is portability, stealthiness, and Leica glass. Less is better, next get rid of my big Monfrotto tripod and monopod!

Is there a half body case that can incorporate the Leica handgrip? Any comments on neck straps?

Leica's own ERC is a possible solution. I sometimes use the base part with hand-grip. I rarely use my neck strap but substituted the Leica wrist strap. Much quicker to extract from a bag.

Welcome to X1 ownership!

Congrats on your purchase - great camera!

I'd keep the handgrip and if you wanted a case that was compatible with it, buy the Leica Ever Ready case (with included viewfinder pouch in the same grey leather). I have a new one that I do not want, but they are hard to sell on so don't pay more than £120 new.

Personally I splashed out on a Leica lens hood (#12460) which has a good metal branded cap, and is internally threaded. Here is a pic. Personally I would avoid any filter in front of the lens; it doesn't need it and introduces more light induced artefacts. The hood offers up a great extra cupped hand position for very low speed shots.

The wrist strap is somehow more useful with such a small camera compared with the neck strap, which I have never used.

the size of my wife's wrist never could go around mine. The camera needs the hand grip and the thumb grip.

I think the barrel extension will also give it further hand hold stability. I do like its weight, the lighthouse flash needs a delicate touch so it does not pop up. The controls are intuitive getting back to D2 and film mode. But the viewfinder gives no info where as the D2 viewfinder repeated what was on the glass. Suprisingly expensive for just a framing device.
