M5 rewind lever stuck/stiff

Hi!

After shooting an M8 for a few years, I decided to get myself an M5, which I got yesterday.

My only problem is that during the first roll something went wrong, and now the rewind lever is very stiff, up to the point where it stops the roll from spinning when advancing. I'm open to suggestions and info how the rewind lever should work in a working M5. I am loving the camera otherwise, so I'm not too keen on returning it for a refund.

Hi,

Do you mean the rewind crank on the base used to rewind the film into the cassette?

or the transport lever used to advance the film, and wind on the shutter?

Make sure the rewind crank is folded flat into it's recess because it's ratchet mechanism locks the shaft tightly as soon as it is raised. After loading shoot off two blank exposures, then unfold the crank on the base and gently turn it in the direction of the arrow until resistance is felt. Then fold it down again, and click off a third blank frame, observing that the crank rotates when you wind on with the transport lever. The counter should now be at "1".

When the film is finished, make sure you move the film release lever (above the self timer on the front of the body) downwards to allow rewind. This should pop up once you wind on the empty camera, before reloading.

If your transport lever is stiff, with film correctly loaded, it might be best to remove the film (winding it back as before, noticing the frame number, so you could re-use it from +1 frame past that number) and try the wind on without a film, observing with the back open. It may need a service (SLA)

Precisely.

The rewind lever is stiff even with the baseplate off the camera. It's currently so stiff that the film advance is having trouble pulling the film from the cassette, because the rewind lever refuses to let the cassette roll.

The film advance itself is smooth as butter, with and without film.

Hello designed,

Welcome to the Forum.

Make sure you wipe ALL visible oil off. Remember, the black inside cameras & lenses is soft. There should be no residue of oil. You might leave the bottom plate off the camera to air it for a day or 2 w/ the camera separately safe & dust free in a clear plastic bag. Move the lock back & forth & work the rewind. Let it rest turned all kinds of ways. Check for residue in the bottom plate after doing this & it is working completely smoothly. You don't want to get oil into the camera.

Enjoy the shutter speed dial, the sensitive narrow angle meter, the set shutter speed visible in the viewfinder, the set ASA/DIN which can be seen from above as well as in the traditional manner from the back & the removable (If you want to) quick load. All the best to be found in an M.

Best Regards,

Michael
