Anyone want an M8? 50 'lux?

The native VF is -0.5 so it depends on what you need. if your glasses are +1.5 (far sighted) you would need a +2.0 to equal your glasses but that may be too much for distance so you might compromise with a +1.5 or +1.0. You want to see the patch image clearly but not blur the distant image. If you are near sighted you need to go the other way so you can see the distant image as you see the range finder patch just fine. The magnifier works nicely becasue it enhances the patch without causing the distant image to be out of focus. (If I got this wrong womeone can feel free to correct me).

Okay, at the advice of several forum members, I did shoot a few more days to see if I could adjust to the whole rangefinder thing. I cannot. I have decided to either return the camera to Camerawest, or to sell it. It has about 250 exposures, has not been registered. Same with the lens. PM me if you are interested.

I am surprised to say, I find that I cannot adjust to a rangefinder camera's workflow. I really do prefer an SLR, as I find it easier to frame and focus. I guess my eyes are not what they used to be. It's a real bummer to me, because I find that I really like the small size. Maybe a Rebel is in my future. :(

Some of you know that I bought this black M8 about one week ago, along with a black 50 lux, both bought new from Camerawest. Haven't even put the neckstrap on or removed the plastic from the bottom plate. I also have an extra battery too. Fired off about 150 frames I think.

Please make an offer. I don't know if this is the appropriate place for a For Sale post.

p.s. Offer has to be sigbificantly better than what Camerawest will alow me to return the camera for. They have a 15% restocking fee. The camera has not been registered. I paid 4795 plus 2895 for the lens. I'll throw in the extra battery.

Not sure how Leica deals with the warranty but with other camera companies you need a receipt from a authorized dealer and you have to be the original owner, IE the warranty is not transferable.

Even though you have not registered the camera for someone else to get warranty service they may need a receipt made out to them. Not a 3rd party. You are not a authorized Leica dealer.

I wish you good luck in selling it but I would send it back or get use to using a rangefinder.

If you could describe what problems you are having the people on this forum would be happy to help in any way they can.

It might be as simple as getting a diopter lens to correct the viewfinder image so you can focus easier.

I know that once I got the right diopter for my vision using the camera became much easier and more enjoyable. In fact I ordered a second diopter of the same strength to use on my M3. I also have the 1.25X magnifier but find I don't use it as much as I thought I would. With the right diopter I really don't need the magnifier for most of the lenses I have.

I recently got diopters for both my M7 and M8, and they make a huge difference (even though my eye doctor says I don't really need glasses...yet). Based on his recommendation (-0.75 or so) I ordered both a -0.5 and a -1.0 diopter from B&H, figuring I'd try them out, and return the one that didn't work as well and get another of the better one. Surprise, the M7 is without question better with the -0.5, and the M8 is obviously better with the -1.0.

So if possible, I'd highly recommend trying several diopters that are in the ballpark of your calculated diopter for best results.

I agree that the diopter makes far more difference than the 1.25 magnifier---my wide open close up summilux focus issues have been vanquished. Highly recommended.

Until Later,

Clyde Rogers

John what you describe is a little off. I was under the same opinion until I ordered almost every + diopter Leica makes. I wear +1.5 reading glasses and have good distance sight. So I ordered a +1.5 diopter thinking that would be good enough and it did improve the image in the rangefinder patch and the whole viewfinder but it was not totally clear. So I then ordered a +2 diopter, figuring that the viewfinder is set at a -.5, and the +2 was even worse. Everything in the viewfinder was blurry. I then did a little research and found that the viewfinder is actually set at a distance of 2 meters, about 7 feet. In other words when you look through the viewfinder the image you see, no matter how close or far away the subject is, it is displayed in the viewfinder at 2 meters. Well at 2 meters, 7 feet, I don't need my reading glasses to see fairly good. In fact if I have my +1.5 reading glasses on and view something at 7 feet away it is blurry.

So I then ordered a +1 diopter, +.5 to make up for the -.5 of the viewfinder and another +.5 to help with close subject focusing.

Now everything in the viewfinder is clear and focusing is more precise.

So what you want to do when getting a diopter is to gage what you need to see clear at 2 meters, 7 feet. Not what you need to read with.

Now it might be different if you are using the minus diopters.

hat makes sense because I have tried a +3 (I don't use one to read but have played with a +3 in the drug store) and everything outside of the viewfiner was blurry. The magnifier may be the best bet, 1.25x or 1.33x.

I'm sure your intentions are good here but I think this is bordering on scare-moungering regarding the warranty/receipt issue, especially considering a 15% restocking fee vs selling it privately. I very much doubt that there would be ANY problem selling the camera (heck, I'd buy it as my 2nd M8 if I had the spare cash!)

I've never run into an issue with the warranty problem; if you've got a valid receipt & warranty card then you're good to go. Imagine what happens if you buy the camera and give it as a gift? Same situation.

Btw: give it some more time. I found that since I've had my M8 that my Nikon DSLR's haven't been out of the bag and that's for nearly two months ...

Good luck either way.

Like I said I don't know how Leica deals with there warranty.

With Nikon it does not matter what card you send in or whatever registration you do online if you need to send a camera in for service under warranty you need to include a copy of the sales receipt from a authorized Nikon dealer and it has to be made out to the person that is sending in the camera and requesting warranty service. The Nikon warranty is NON transferable.

I am not scare mongering about warranties. Just stating facts as I know them.

Know that we're going on a tangent here but I'm so excited...This week will receive my chrome M8 & lenses (28 'cron & 50 'lux) that I'm curious about this focussing issue. My issue is that I'm left handed (and eyed). The M8 seems awkward to sight w/ the left eye. Should I try switching to R eye, or use the less ergonomic but comforting L?

Sorry about continuing the tangent. I've been using Leicas for decades and always focused with my left eye. I find it more natural and more convenient. If my left eye is hanging out the side I have shut it to avoid double images. Focusing with the left eye, the right eye can stay open, since it's just looking at the back of the camera. And when my M8 eventually arrives that's what I'll be doing with that too.

Carmen, when you sell the camera, go back to the dealer and have the dealer do the transaction with the new owner and then pay you. That way, the new owner will get the camera in a way that she/he can register it.

You showed great restraint after being crowded not to sell the camera. Glad your other one works so well for you.

Regards,

Body has been sold! Just need to unload the lens now, and the extra battery. Any takers? A brand new 50 1.4 ASPH. Anyone? Anyone? Bueler? Bueler?
