mrcmrc Posted March 11, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 11, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I wish to ask about the reliability of the S2, this because it's some time now that I thought switching to medium format. Now is two years that I use the M9, I am satisfied with the image quality, but unfortunately I cannot say the same about the reliability of this camera: at first it had some electrical problems (sent to Solms), now sensor cracking. Frankly I was hoping to find a little more reliability in the Leica brand, and maybe I'm wrong to complain because other users have encountered many more problems than me. And then I would to know if there are similar problems with the S2. Even if, I repeat, from the Leica brand I expected more, even in the M9 line. Thanks for any help, - Marco. albertknappmd Posted March 14, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 14, 2012 Hello Marco- I have had my S2 for two years now and have exposed it to the heat and dust of Spain and the cold and dust of the Antarctic amongst . I have climbed mountains and been in many unhospitable climes. I accidentally dropped the camera in the Antactic snows... I have not had a problem with it and recommend it wholeheartedly... JMacD Posted March 14, 2012 Share #4 Posted March 14, 2012 I have had an M8, and currently have an M9 and S2. The reliability and service with the S2 is much better than the M in my opinion for two reasons: 1. The S2 was designed from the ground up and they took extra time to bring it to market. As soon as you say weatherproof, things improve. With the S, they won't release is until they are sure of durability, witness the CS version of the lens. Kodak sensors cracking in the M were an initial issue. No similar problem in the S. 2. Leica knew that to compete in MF they needed top service, so the repair response is like it is a different company from the M. I have had no difficulties with the S camera that would have required a return to Solms. The only issue has been the early cameras had their top of camera OLED display dim over time. Leica was willing to quickly replace them at no cost even when out of warrantee. I have not bothered to get mine replaced as I am using the camera all the time. I keep waiting for when it needs some other adjustment, and it hasn't needed anything. The firmware updates have continuously improved the camera as well as improvements to Lightroom for image work. I consider the camera now an S2.5 For more info on the S system, you should consult the red dot forum, which has a huge number of S users discussing the camera and it's images. http://www.reddotforum.com/content.php Jack
Grummz Posted June 4, 2012 Share #5 Posted June 4, 2012 I have taken my S2 all around the world, in extreme humidity and hot locales. I've had no problems. The thing is a tank. I will also agree that service is extremely first class. I had a memory card problem which they traced back to the card itself, and even got me a replacement from the manufacturer. gdb Posted June 4, 2012 Share #6 Posted June 4, 2012 + 1 No problem with reliability. But I have a problem when I use the camera in the heat (moderate heat: a trip in Macedonia, northern Greece, in may): the rubber housing does not stick very well and gets loose where you hold the camera. I am considering sending it back to Solms Gérard

GMB Posted June 9, 2012 Share #8 Posted June 9, 2012 No problem here either, and I took it to various European locations as well as to South Africa (shooting in dust and rain in an open vehicle) and Sri Lanka (taking it into the rain forest). The only advice I would give is get a second battery even if you (rightly) think that you will never drain one before being able to charge it. As I posted in another thread, mine went recently dead without any warning, and I then learned that this has happened to a few others as well. Chances are probably low, but I would never again travel without a second battery.
