That is basically correct. However with this type of combo on film I never found a significant difference. On digital, well it really depends on the amount of pixelpeeping. At 200% - sure - on print - not really. The Apo 1.4x can be said not to deteriorate the image. I even used both extenders stacked on the Apo 280/4.0 and could not complain about the results.

From a very reliable source I was told that a 2x converter image at 100% should be superior to a same-lens-without-converter image at 200%. I tested this one time and it was true for my lens/converter combination. By superior I mean sharper (higher resoluton).

Perhaps - it very much depends on the quality of both the lens and the converter. A lens with CA or other faults will simply present a magnified version of the flaws. A poor converter (and most 2x converters are in this class) will introduce flaws of its own.

In my experience, a top quality lens and a top quality converter will indeed produce a better image than a 2x blowup of the original image; however, in most cases when using inferior glass the blowup will give the better image. YMMV, of course.

[...]Remember that Leica long lenses aren't image stabilised [...]

An aside - with some lenses and cameras' image stabilization does not work when the unit is already stable, such as well held (rare case), or on a tripod. In fact, if on a tripod stabilization can _add_ shake.
