Guest Ornello Posted March 22, 2012 Share #123 Â Posted March 22, 2012 That's not what you were saying earlier. Â I guarantee you'd never earned any commission from me... Â Well perhaps that's not my fault. You don't even know me at all. Maybe no-one on earth is perfect enough for you....and we didn't work on commission, by the way. I did have a very loyal following, for your information, because I didn't treat people in the manner you accuse me of. Â You seem to have some blind hatred of me for some unknown reason and frankly it is becoming tiresome. Â You don't know the first thing about me, how I conducted my business, or anything. To be successful, having the interest of the customer is paramount, and that is exactly what I did. After I quit the business, I ran into a customer at a party. He told me that he and several of his friends were disappointed that I left the business, and that they had no-one to go to anymore. Why don't you find some way to turn that into something negative? Â I earned the respect and admiration of many customers during my days in retailing, and you haven't the slightest knowledge of any of that. You weren't there. Â Same with ice-cream. Bertillon in Paris had dozens of flavours but I always managed to chose one without the salesman narrowing it down to one or two for me. earleygallery Posted March 22, 2012 Share #125  Posted March 22, 2012 I've had lots of experience with crappy pushy salespeople. I took a call at work today in fact from someone asking for the MD to speak about our website. I tried to explain that he has a web design company and wouldn't be interested in using an outside firm but they were obviously reading a script which had an 'objection handling' response and we went round in circles for several minutes.  I sometimes like to let them practice on me when I've nothing better to do, for a fun diversion.  The girl from the cable company comes to mind. A load of questions with a yes/no answer like "Would you like a wider selection of channels for a lower price", "would you agree with me that faster broadband is better than slower broadband" etc, until finally restating everything but as "you have asked for.....you have told me you want...." then telling me I had chosen their premium service which will cost me £X per month and can I give my credit card details for the initial payment. Phone down.

Not hatred, just irritation. You pontificate about things you know nothing about - scanning, printing, M cameras before the M7 - and refuse to accept that any opinions other than your own as being valid.  As for your selling techniques I'm guessing you're in your 60s or retired and haven't worked as a salesman for some time.

The point is it was me who made the choice and not the salesman.

During 3.5 years in the 90s, I had a second stint in photo retailing, with a different firm. During that time, I was the #2 salesman in the entire chain of 15 or 20 stores, second only to another guy in the same store who ran used equipment. What you post needs a counterpoint such that it doesn't rest there for eternity as a "truth", when most of it is nonsense, I'm afraid.  I'm not the only person who thinks so. Peter H Posted March 22, 2012 Share #133  Posted March 22, 2012 These sales techniques do sound incredibly quaint and antiquated.  Perhaps there's a cultural difference too, although I doubt it. I've not come across salespeople anywhere in Europe of the US trying this sort of approach since the one time I foolishly spent some time listening to a double-glazing salesman a few years back.  And before that; well, my Dad nearly bought a vacuum cleaner from a door-to-door salesman in the days when Hughie Green and Michael Miles had the British public in the palms of their hands.   If you go into a shop and the salesman pulls out 15 cameras onto the counter, you're going to be overwhelmed. If you ask for help, even he will get confused.  Nikkormat or Canon Ftb?  Well I have more experience in photography than the vast majority of people on the planet, so what I have to say is of some merit. I have seen pros say and do things that I was shocked to see and hear, and I had to keep my mouth shut, and it was not easy.  Here on a forum, we have the freedom to say what we think and believe to be true. My credentials are pretty good, so what these 'others' think is not really of much relevance, at least to me. Interesting that the cameras you chose for your illustration are decades old, rather like your sales technique.
andybarton Posted March 22, 2012 Share #138  Posted March 22, 2012 Who, on earth, goes into a shop and says "I want to buy a camera. I have no idea what sort of camera I want, nor which brand. Show me everything you have, and I'll decide"  People who buy cameras go into shops and say "I want a dSLR. I have £1000 to spend, what have you got?"  Or, "Can I see your Nikon dSLR cameras, please. I have £1,000 to spend"  People self-filter automatically, do the salesperson just has to put a couple of choices on the counter anyway.

I bet you couldn't do it.
