While in the Antarctic waters we frequently saw humpback whales, as well as huge pods of killer whales, twice with over 80 members - there were some NOA scientists aboard to count and tag killer whales so I'm confident in their counts.

Visit our site to see much more of the Antarctic.

Good timing.... whale watching...is something that cannot be translated by any "media"..being next to these creatures "as it happens" is always something very special.

Thanks for sharing

Cheers, JRM

K-H, Larry, Bill and Paul - thank you.

John -Tthank you. I was using the borrowed V Lux 2 for this shot, and it took some getting used to to make it work as I wanted to in situaitons like this.

I hope I'm not being too critical here but I think it's an absolutely great shot but that it could use a little post work. I suspect for my liking there is some color massaging that could be done in Light Room that would make the image sing for me and become a wall hanger. Just my opinion, don't take offense. My judgement comes from all the great images I have seen on this particular computer screen and this leaves a little to be desired in either color or contrast for more snap. It is a terrific image though, make no mistake about that.

Jim - Thank you. The scientists went out in a Zodiac admid the killer whale pods, armed with a crossbow which would leave a geo-tracker attached to the dorsal fin, detatched from teh bolt's shaft which they'd reel in. they claimed that the killer whales did not experiecne any pain form the tagging, and it certainly appeared that way as we watched through binoculars.

Ray - Thank you. Please explain exactly what you have in mind so that I can attempt it.
