I just take photographs

As you have put these up for critique & discussion:

With respect to the first photograph, it doesn't grab me as particularly interesting with respect to the subjects and their expressions and actions, nor compositionally. I think colour significantly detracts from the first photograph and pulls ones eye away from the subjects, especially that lurid pink top. It is not the clutter or that it is busy, but I think that it's really not that interesting, including the main subjects expression. The two cook's uninteresting white backs occupy an excessive amount of the image and further detract from it including by obstructing view of the people behind them. It might be better cropped and nicely toned in B&W. That is not to say that a photograph of a large number of people in one place doing their own thing can't be interesting it's difficult to pull off.

The second photograph is the better of the two. Black & white suits the image and allows ones eye to address the 3 dominant subjects who are intrinsically more interesting and are nicely placed throughout the image. It is much stronger compositionally.

Regards,

Mark

On your second image, squint your eyes and note that once the detail is stripped away you are left the basic composition of the shot. Now do the same with the first and not that nothing pops out at you. You need something, anything, even basic geometric shapes to pop out at you or you simply have what I call visual noise and not a song or music.

If you have these printed look at the upside down, both of them and note that the simpler image has "pop" to it. If you want to develop your own style spend more time looking at images you DON'T like, or yours or others, and ask yourself why you don't like them. When you see a great image you may not realize why you like it. When you see a poor image the problem frequently becomes very clear. Your fist image contains too much visual information and your second is dead on IMHO.

I would have liked the second image even better with the 4th man on the right cropped out to the back of the clown. I find I spend a longer time looking at images with 3, 5 and 7 in them. The three men would have been a much stronger shot for me. I think Hank did a lot of works divisible by 2 and they don't do too much for me :D

****WHY THE HELL CAN'T I PUT PARAGRAPH BREAKS IN MY WRITING. I PUT THEM IN AND THE FORUM REMOVES THEM? IT'S VERY HARD TO READ.*****

Your fist image contains too much visual information and your second is right on IMHO.

I think mankind has a tendency to subconsciously pair things off. When you have 3, 5, and 7 it can't be done and therefore more interesting AS A GENERAL RULE.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to comment, much appreciated and some very helpful and good critiques.

Here is another 'complex' one converted to B&W, again opinions welcomed but I wont be surprised if everyone has had enough.

The last one, the monochrome is by far the best photograph, concentration goes to the girl clasping her hands, its thought provoking.

Like you I started shooting street photography recently. I shoot portraits for a living and last year was starting to get really bored and tired of always shooting for someone else. Street photography is a fantastic release. I am shooting with a Fuji X-100 at the moment but in a couple of weeks I am heading down to Leica at Mayfair in London to "experience" the Leica M9.

Street photography is for me, I would not worry about the judges if I was you. Judges judge for themselves, shoot for yourself and if what you like coincides with the judges then great.

I put together a few images for a youtube video, you might consider doing the same as a project. There is also a massive movement out there for street photography.

You had this one hidden away the whole time??? Very good!

Thanks Larry,

The reason I did not post this to start with is the smoke over the boy's face which I thought rather spoiled the picture. I tried to mitigate the smoke in PS but never came up with a convincing result.

Thanks Stew, these pictures were taken with the M9 and the 50mm Summicron, a great all round combo in my opinion. I'm sure you will enjoy your M9, nothing better I think.

I'm going to post on the 'sport leisure' forum a different sort of picture just for interest, to demo of how sharp and crisp the M9 can be (in this instance using the 75mm Summicron). I dont always want 'sharp' but it is nice to know that it is there if you need it.
