Double Negative Posted March 15, 2012 Share #21 Posted March 15, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Should work. Did the same yesterday and was offered to download LR4. Cool. Yeah, I don't see why not.
Advertisement Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Hi Double Negative, Take a look here M9 and Lightroom 4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Rolo Posted March 15, 2012 Share #22 Posted March 15, 2012 Leica System works fine providing you haven't already used your TAN lives on LR3. Need to register your M9 on My Products and the Serial Number appears in the Benefits Software Download Section. Select LR4 for Mac or PC; add your TAN number and confirm and LR4 will download. Ten minutes after, Leica will confirm your LR4 License Number by email. On entry to LR4 there's the opportunity to insert the License Number and that's it. First impressions are that it's slower than LR3. Being fair to LR4, I've only done a couple of images so far, but I'm seeing the spinning wheel for the first time. Second impression is that the Moire Brush will remove the colour, but not the pattern.
smleica Posted March 16, 2012 Share #23 Posted March 16, 2012 I can confirm this also - bought my M9 last month, went to download Lightroom and was offered Lightroom 3 and Lightroom 4 Lightroom 4 downloaded and full version activated no problem

nggalai Posted March 16, 2012 Share #25 Posted March 16, 2012 Bought my M9 a year ago but never used the TAN. Tried it out yesterday and received a full Lightroom 4 license. I was able to chose between LR 3.6 and LR 4; the former is kept online for legacy OS users (Windows XP; don’t know what Mac OS is required for LR4). i.e. The purchase date is of no concern; the only thing that matters is whether you’ve already used your TAN or not. Paul J Posted March 19, 2012 Share #26 Posted March 19, 2012 Just used my TAN on LR4 download. Wow, the improvement is really quite astonishing. I just converted a photo to "process 2012". A seemingly, completely washed out window had a lot of detail recovered at the click of the update button! Upgrade is highly recommended.
Rolo Posted March 19, 2012 Share #27 Posted March 19, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Upgrade is highly recommended. I've abandoned it for the time being. The results are very good, but there's a speed issue that I don't have with any other programme. Just clicking on the numerical settings in the Develop Module brings the spinning beach ball. No idea what it's doing at that time, but it's frustrating when there are lots of images to process. I'm using a Mac Pro with 16gb memory and a 30" NEC screen and a 24" Mac Cinema screen for a second. Applying Synchronise also causes a hesitation such that I'm not sure that the instruction has been received. I'm sure that Adobe will fix this, but I can wait for that. Paul J Posted March 19, 2012 Share #28 Posted March 19, 2012 Yes that sounds frustrating indeed. I have none of the problems you've mentioned. I have a Mac Pro also. I'm running 10.7 on an SSD. Clicking and changing the numerical values on my machine is instant. No beach ball at all. Sync of settings and metadata is also the same speed as LR3. i.e. instant. Which OS are you using? Rolo Posted March 19, 2012 Share #29 Posted March 19, 2012 Which OS are you using? using Snow Leopard. Can't imagine that selecting a numerical value could cause any load for the system. In addition to my M9 stuff, I scan MF film and process 200 mb files in LR3 without any hesitation from the system. See that users are reporting same issues on the Adobe Forums. I recall an earlier version of LR having similar issues Whilst I use LR for viewing files and bulk processing, I prefer Bridge and Photoshop CS5 for individual image processing and print generation. There are several other significant issues with LR4, so I suspect Adobe will be providing a 4.1 update within a few weeks.
Double Negative Posted March 19, 2012 Share #30 Posted March 19, 2012 Hmm, that's strange. LR4 chugs along for me, and I'm using a moderately dated 2006 Mac Pro (4x 2GHz) w/8GB of RAM on mechanical HDDs. Also using the latest Snow Leopard. I'd make sure your disks have enough free space, maybe run a defrag on them (even Mac OS X benefits from a thorough one every now and then). This can have quite an impact, especially when it's generating previews... The only time it seems "slow" to me.
Rolo Posted March 19, 2012 Share #31 Posted March 19, 2012 I'm not short of resource, including over 5 terabytes of hard disk, with software isolated on one drive. Here's a thread on the Adobe Forum with over 300 posts on it on this issue: Adobe Forums: Lightroom 4 is slow As I said, it's not image processing that causing the spinning beach balls, just selecting. Maybe there are still previews being generated in the background as I've 80,000 images stored. LR4 looks like a really worthwhile upgrade, but I don't want to wait for a system to catch up with my instructions. Im definitely not going to shut a screen down, as some have suggested, that's crazy. I will take another look at it and do a re-start to make sure it's fresh. Plug-ins are working fine for me, but not for some others. I'm sure it will settle down in the near future. Ive remembered, it was Photoshop CS4 hat was slow when first released, not LR. Thanks anyway DNeg.

Double Negative Posted March 20, 2012 Share #33 Posted March 20, 2012 Hmm, sorry that didn't help Rolo. Indeed something's afoot. I'm going to check out that Adobe Forum thread now... P.S. In the status bar you can generally see if it's generating previews.

Double Negative Posted March 21, 2012 Share #35 Posted March 21, 2012 Here is an Adobe link that may help Optimize performance | Lightroom I think those tips, while certainly good - are more "common sense" type things. As for the specific issue with LR4 it seems to me the solution may be to re-import your catalog. Perhaps something during the conversion [from LR3] things get bunged up. Folks might recall that the LR4 beta created its own (new) catalog and it wasn't until it was actually released that any conversion took place. Rolo Posted March 21, 2012 Share #36 Posted March 21, 2012 Moved the location of the Cache to the LR4 database which is on a different drive than the software and the beach ball has gone and the system is very responsive now. Not sure if that alone did it, or even whether it's permanent. Adjustment mask is also immediately responsive again. I also changed the Preview sizes upwards and the automatic discarding of previews to Never. Fingers crossed. X

X My LR 4 was not performing badly, but it was more sluggish than LR3 was, so I went through the list and did these 2 things you mentioned (along with optimizing the catalog and increasing the size of the camera raw cache to 20GB). It helped.
Paul J Posted March 21, 2012 Share #38 Posted March 21, 2012 Good to hear you got it sorted, I assumed it was something to do with the way the cache was working. Perhaps it or its pathway was damaged/corrupted during the upgrade. There is a lot of info on the web about how easy it is to damage the lightroom cache. As simple as it being used while Time Machine is running.
