Staring March 8th PMA starts and i plan on attending but i was just thinking maybe they may come out with something new . I honestly have no idea, but what would you think if they did what would it be. Let's remember this is a major show and usually a big time for new anouncements and products. So far what i have seen from others is a little bit of a yawn . Pentax has a 645 but other than that nothing really hot, do you think Leica maybe may surprise us.

as a proud black M8 owner, and as much as i think this is an amazing camera, Leica was abit too ambitious in meeting the deadline of showing off the M8 at photokina.

they should learn from this and take their time. especially when many current M8 owners are waiting for the much anticipated 1.10 firmware.

....just my two cents.

ps. a pleasant surprise would be if they unveiled FW 1.10 that contains fixes and all sorts of other goodies at PMA.......

There's a gaping hole between the product range between the DL3 and D3...... which could be filled with a D2P:

Throw in the new 7.5MP sensor from the D3

Keep the fabulous f2.0 Vario Summicron from the D2

Do not offer interchangeable lenses. and maybe no OIS (to allow product differentiation from the D3)

Add ISO 800

faster and larger RAW buffer

faster AF

And Leica will cream the competition, recreate a fabulous cash-cow which can fund the development of a M9

My sense is that the M8's development and initial support has imposed a significant drain on Leica's resources. There will certainly be no new product announcements from Leica at this PMA.

It's also debatable whether or not the Photo Marketing Association's annual show is at all relevant to Leica.

I agree with Ken, Photokina has traditionally been where new Leica products are announced and that gives them an excuse until September next year. Does make you wonder what they will be showing, they can hardly show the DMR and the R-system is surely set to drift until they come up with a new digital solution.

Maybe another digicam with Panny?

Seriously, and a bit cynically, what could they bring? If they talk about the firmware update for the M8 with filters, all that does is underscore what could have been done right out of the gate with the M8. Since they are discontinuing the DMR, unless they have something deep in the hands of phantom testers someplace, the R successor will be a wishful promise for a long time out.

What would I like to hear them announce? Well this is a "marketing" type of convention, so maybe that they are working with third parties to help produce flawless conversion profiles for all of their cameras. Or that they will be shipping a special DNG converter that will permit files to be used with full detail, bit depth, color profiles, filter and lens conversions, etc., etc., with almost any RAW converter and all the most popular ones now on the market. That would be nice.

It would be nice to hear them lay some groundwork for the R future with respect to body, features, sensor plans, new lenses, and continuation of that entire system, but without even prototype hardware to show, not many will care or listen.

If they do attend, I would imagine the poor chaps manning the booth having to were body armor or something.

I was thinking maybe a lens or two. Maybe some lenses for the 4/3rds camera. Maybe a new grip , that alone would be icing on the cake. Honestly i don't know what they could do with all the effort that went on for the M8, that had to take a lot of resources. But there new CEO wants to grow it so hard to say

Guy,

What additional lenses (for the M8) would be options? Faster wide angles?...like the 24/2 or a 16/2.8? Maybe a usable faster tele with truly functional viewfinder....say a new 135/2 or something really sexy? That would grab a lot of attention for sure.

I understand that they are spread a bit thin and do need to also deal with the 4/3s cameras, but that does not look like their future. I could be really wrong, but I would think they need to build the next R as a continuation of a high-end professional camera with no compromises, and carefully planned out for use. By that I mean a reasonable sensor size (FF would be preferred), total image capture control with the same kind of "not in your way" style that graces the M8. Wireless to a computer to get away from tethered shooting completely but still very much studio friendly. How about true weather sealing also? (That is the one thing I really wished they had done on the M8. Not all that hard to do with the few number of ingress points and buttons it has now.)

The other accessories would be nice, but they are just glitter compared to what they need to put out there, in my humble opinion. We need them, but not the kind of thing you take to a big show like PMA, I do not think.

I mean i would love to see a new R digital but that hope is like me getting 20 years younger at this time. Not gonna happen. But it would be nice to know publicly what is next, maybe not all the details but just a here is what we are bringing you in next Feb 2008. Than list off about 10 features of what the new R would be. hell i would come home with a smile . I am really hoping something good comes out of this show, I thing us user base needs something positive to get exicted about.

Lenses for the M there are about 5 that i would love to see.

15mm F4 or wider and 55mm thread. Rectilinear to beat the band

24 F2

28 1.4 although tough to beat the f2 today

60 macro , yes a bloody macro at least something at 12 inches away

135 f2 APO, who needs frame lines

just on Leica D system and 4/3

There are planned for release 5 lenses from Leica D, I cant think of a better opportunity to gives us a look see. And since 4/3 is about to get a major shakeup from the Olympus end, with 2 new cameras for release, and detail of the pro line to be expanded on (E-P1 due for summer release), and an additional 2-5 lenses from Oly waiting, Leica may be feeling the pressure to contribute.

with Olympus's penchant for innovation, we can get a look see at future features for Canon models ;)

I know it wont happen, but it would be nice if Panasonic could be persuaded to make a 4/3 sensor equipped Leica CM/Minilux with a fixed 19mm ( 38mm equiv ) lens, Optical Viewfinder , RAW and full manual controls.

I have heard more than once that Panasonic have been working on a 4/3 EVIL

(electronic viewfinder interchangeable lens)

I actually think the Canon 1D Mk. III maybe an interesting camera (just not for me). But if the image quality is there then this is a milestone camera for sports and wildlife.

I don't quite see the 1D3 as a milestone camera, to be honest. It has 2MP more, 1.5fps more and 1 extra ISO setting at the high end. This is all very incremental. The live view is about the only revolutionary concept, but this is hardly usable at high framerates such as animal and sport photographers would use. Why do you think it is such a milestone, Uwe?

I hope that Leica will announce firmware 1.10 along with a set of new profiles, and perhaps an SDK for developers to import M8 DNG files. Something which I don't think anyone has mentioned, and which doesn't affect me personally, but I also hope for DMR firmware 1.3 for all those long-suffering DMR owners.

It would be nice if a new lens was announced for the M range though. I would say that the lens which is missing the most is a 15/4.0 Asph or 15/2.8 Asph. After that, perhaps an 18/4.0 Asph or 18/2.8 Asph. Then probably a 24/2.0 Asph, although given the size of the current 24, I doubt this is feasible in a reasonable amount of space. The 15/4.0 Asph would be what I would want to buy. I like the CV15 a lot, but to have a coupled Leica at a sane price would be the ultimate.

Something way out there which would be awesome would be a Visoflex 4 for the R mount. I would pick up an Apo-Macro-100/2.8 so fast that my dealer's head would spin for days.

I sympathise with this - but equally I am pretty sure it won't happen alas.

Oh and personally I wouldn't change the sensor but use the Venus 3 engine and/or do whatever is needed to improve the noise performance.

One small thing that I would relish is a dedicated tele-adapter (bangs his drum again) for the D2. We have a w/a one, so why not?

maybe because it would weigh 47 lbs and you would need the Leica accessory donkey to haul the thing around
