Existing lenses with M8?

Firstly, please excuse me if this an obvious question...

Before I take the plunge an join the waiting list for an M8, I wanted to check whether my M7 lenses are all going to be compatible:

Elmarit-M 1:2.8/28mm

Summicron-M 1:2/35mm ASPH

Tele-Elmarit-M 1:2.8/90mm

I understand I might need to get them coded? What does this entail?

And once this has been done, are the still usable with the M7?

As I say, apologies if these are obvious questions!

Many thanks,

Simon

No need to wait . Camera West probably still has some.

Lenese should be fine and coding will not effect the M7

Just code the 28 and 35 for the cyan cast correction when it comes out in firmware

And for the time being you can hand-code them, just in case you decide to change your lineup. I douct, btw, Guy, that cyan vignetting correction is needed on the 35. I did not see it in practice up to now.

It's slightly there although really hard to pick up but he 28 for sure . There maybe some improvement regardless of the cyan cast part in the new firmware.

Simon--

Your lenses are likely all compatible with the coding process. For more information, go to Leica Camera AG - M lenses with 6-bit coding. There is a link there for "Further Information," which will give you full details.

Coding officially involves sending the lenses to Leica New Jersey or Leica Germany.

For $125 per lens in the US, Leica adds an identifying zebra stripe (6-bit binary code) to the lens mount. The lens remains completely usable on previous bodies.

The coding allows the M8 to recognize which lens took a picture, adding the information to the EXIF data. It also allows the camera firmware to do a better job of compensating for vignetting as it writes the file to SD card.

I can't say it's worth subscribing to Reid Reviews just to see examples of the vignetting correction, but Sean does show a number of examples of how the lens coding benefits the image.

In addition, the next version of M8 firmware is expected to add correction for a cyan color shift toward the corners of wide angles when using the IR cut filters.

The most important lenses to have coded are wide angles.

Leica US has a current promotion that if you buy a new M lens (which is already coded, of course), you get vouchers for the coding of two more lenses at no charge.

At the moment, people seem to be finding that it is taking 6 weeks for Leica to code a lens, primarily because of the large number of lenses being sent for coding.

Your best bet might be to go ahead and buy the M8 and peruse this forum for more information. The M8 will work okay with uncoded lenses but better with coded lenses.

I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the replies!

Since posting the original message - I've bought an M8! Can't wait to get it!

Just a couple of things to ask...

- could someone advise the approximate focal length equivalents when using the lenses listed on the M8?

- do the frame lines in the viewfinder relate accurately when using these lenses on the M8?

- I keep reading about filters - are these essential?

Sorry if these are all very obvious questions - I confess that I'm an extravagant amateur photographer!

Thanks,

Simon

The focal lengths are multiplied with 1.33 to give the view you will see. The framelines are adjusted to the lenses and are correct, although of course, they no longer represent the original focal lengths, but rather how those focal lengths work on the M8.
