Today, I tried to go back to a DSLR after X1 test drive

It didn't work.:(

After reading so much about the D7000 and the high IQ, I stopped by Showcase this morning and tried it out. I absolutely hated that thing. It is as wide as it is tall and wide, feels like plastic and the grip is so uncomfortable, I couldn't wait to give it back!

After 40 years of using Nikon SLRs and a lot of DSLRs (D1,D2h,D2x, D80,D90,D300,D40), I just can't see myself walking around with something so large!

The R-system is so much more appealing especially, the R8/9. So for the same price, I can get an R8 body (using my Cron 50) and a used X1 for less than the D7000 with a decent lens.

So, I am now re-considering the X1 because with the A&A half case and the external VF, it was a joy to use. And the pictures aren't half bad either!;)

Interesting! The X1 would be an excellent companion to R-kit. It would make you realize what a lot of quality lurks in a small package!

Yes, I was very impressed. I have never shot a 35mm lens exclusively so I need to revise my approach to the way I see things and photograph them. I have always used a 50mm (whether it be my R4 or a Nikon body)...or a zoom but this is a first for me.;)

Nikon? yes, there is a place in my heart for it ! Since when I was 20 and could not afford one! Still using a lot my FM2 beside the x1 (as you can see in the last photo in my blog here!) and I tried as well the D-7000 which is absolutely a good camera. But when being used to "simple" cameras like the Ms or the x1 I did not find in a good relationship with the D-7000...which is a pity because sometimes I need a medium tele lens on a digital body...

PS: when I really need it I use my wife's D-5100...if she's not at home :D

Well, here is the plan...at the moment...for my Leica bag, nothing exotic:

Film

Leica III F w/ 50mm Summarit 1.5

Leica R4 w/ 50mm Summicron

Digital

Leica X1

The M3 is not shown as it will either be sold to partially fund the X1 purchase or it will have it's own smaller bag for a one camera, one lens outing.:)

I'm really using the X1 a lot. The quality is so good and the camera is really concealable and ultra portable. I would totally choose it over a SLR in most circumstances should it be up to the task at hand.

I've been using the camera on Manual focus a lot. I found it confusing at first but now I understand it fully and my brain has got around it it really is an ingenious system and I love using it. When combined with manual exposure the capture is instant.

A bit of doublng up in the 50 mm dept. Why don't you fiit an R4 or 6 with a 28 for a really compact package?

I must say t hat a mixed workflow with both film and digital was a pita to me. I went for fully digital. My miniset is an M 8 with CV Color Skopar 28, Summicron C 40 and CV Color Heliar 75, with charger and odds and ends it fits easily into the small Leica Kombitasche. It is about one third of the bulk of your proposed set and about the same price.

Ah, yes...I was just looking at the 28 on flickriver. The R4 is really wanting something else along with the Cron 50.:)

Actually, have been thinking of picking up the R8 and a separate lens. Then, putting off the digital acquisition for awhile. The Nikon D7000, while getting great reviews for IQ, are just not a good fit for me. A full-frame D700 may work better but is still $2000 and rather large as in cube-like. Too many choices, I suppose.

Thanks, jaapv.... I have been considering an M8. Interesting choices of lenses there.:)

Main thing, it is small, and excellent quality (M6 for size comparison)
