Solms to the Rescue: Saving a Tricky 'A La Carte' MP

As some of you may know, I've been waiting on an A La Carte MP for quite some time. The camera has a number of off-menu changes, so it's taken longer than usual. Throughout the process, the customer service through Solms has been impeccable. My dealer, Kurland Photo, has also been very patient and easy to work with.

Due to miscommunications, the camera has had to be shipped back and forth between New York and Germany several times. However, I expect to receive it early next week, as it arrived at Leica USA in New Jersey today.

It previously showed up at the dealer about a month ago, looking like this:

The engraver in Solms interpreted my instructions to mean that I did not want the white 'Leica' logo engraved as on a standard MP. I was surprised by the omission and asked them to fix it. Without hesitation, Kurland sent the camera back, and within a few days I received an apologetic e-mail from Solms. They told me it would be a simple job to add the engraving.

For confirmation, they sent me this photo:

I think it looks perfect! I wonder, though, how they managed to engrave the Leica logo on top of the black paint finish. I hope they repainted the engraved letters with black paint before adding the white on top, but who knows. Any ideas?

Well, the camera should be in hand shortly. Will follow-up then.

Pretty

Looks like you configured a Black Counter and Shutter collar

what other options did you select?

Enjoy that incredible instrument

The hard part was the engraving. The placement of my name and the "MADE IN GERMANY" engraving are non-standard. Typically, the MP engraving on the back says "LEICA CAMERA MADE IN GERMANY," and it is closer to the center. I had to be very precise in what I wanted--they nailed it.

I also asked for a black hot shoe, but apparently those simply aren't available for the MP.

Any idea if they paint over the exposed brass with black paint before filling it in with white?

I doubt it, as in my case the "paint" was the M9 coating, which cannot be touched up. For the MP I gues they use the real soft paint.

Soft paint?

Hmm. That sounds troubling. When the white lettering eventually chips away, brass will show underneath?

The white is notgoing to chip away. Cameras of decades old still have it intact. The black paint is soft in order to allow brassing, unless they changed to M9 type coating which I doubt. And should white come away nevertheless it is the easiest thing to restore.
