Lens Detection Paranoia

When I go into my M8's menu, click on Lens Detection, select "On + UV/IR" and click again, I get the "Lens Detection - Tri-Elmar + UV/IR" menu, with 18mm selected, regardless of what lens (if any) I have on the camera.

Is this normal?

The mothership I fear.

I was afraid of that. However, it was due for a trip anyway, as the clock's been going berserk, and on one occasion file numbering was anomalous...

So time for it to go to Solms, it's about 50 weeks since its last trip. I guess it's homesick.

Feel a bit sick myself, though. Maybe an M9 will fix me. Or is that a risk I should avoid....???

Well, I've given the sensor a gentle but thorough polish with a Zeiss lens cleaning microfibre. Made no difference though.

Can I take it that the WATE menu should NOT be coming up this way?

You might try a drop of isopropanol on a Q-tip to clean the lens detection array before sending the camera in for service.

Regards, Jim (another one... :D )

Thanks for the suggestion, Jim (the other one:D)

However, it's gone: UPS picked it up a few days back and it should be in Solms any time now.

I hope to see it again before April is out, with luck!

Kind regards

Jim

  • 1 month later...

As people often inquire hereabouts on Leica CS repair times, I thought I'd post my experience here:

Camera left here (Fort William, highland Scotland, 100 miles from Glasgow) by local UPS sub-agent on 24th Feb, and reached Solms a week later on March 2nd.

Solms emailed me after two weeks on March 15th and I phoned them March 16th to discuss and arrange payment for non-warranty work (see below). Was told turnaround time was about 4 weeks, and assumed that to mean from the day in question, so didn't expect to see my M8 before mid-April.

On Wednesday this week (March 28th) local UPS sub-agent attempted to deliver the camera, but I was not here. Eventually got it today, with invoice/ despatch date shown as 23/3/12.

So total time from camera leaving here on 24/2 to getting back here on 28/3 was 33 days, and of that period time spent in Solms was 21 days. Thus anyone living in what UPS classes as "civilisation" should get a roundtrip of maybe 25 days - not at all bad, I think

Some might be interested to know that the non-warranty work was replacement of the LCD screen which I'd scratched while helping a shepherd land his boat and sheep on Harris last summer. I was not able to get a quote (from dealers or Leica UK) for a non-sapphire replacement without sending the camera to Solms, so I asked them to quote me for this while it was back there for the warranty-covered electronics stuff discussed above. Price for this was as follows:

Part : "rear cover w. window" (sic) : €78.84

Labour costs : €66.91

Total with tax and handling : €220.92

On close inspection, it looks like they replaced the metal plate around the LCD screen as well as the screen itself. I have a "before" picture which clearly show a small ding in the bottom outer corner of the plate, and it's not there now!

Overall, it sure was a drag to be without the M8 for 5 weeks, but all in all not a bad CS experience, and the LCD replacement came in at the low end of my cost-expectation. So I'm a fairly happy Leica-bunny again when all is said and done, and the odds on me trading the M8 for and M9, rather than an X-Pro 1, just went up again :D
