theliquidlens Posted February 23, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Please help! I am shopping for the best camera to buy as my travel camera for traveling around the world with. I am a professional photographer that shoots with a Canon 5DMii normally but I am looking for a camera that I would take with me on my adventures around the world leaving my 5DMII giant at home. I want it to be something that is small and portable but superior quality preferrably as close to full frame sensor as possible. I still want to take awesome shots while I travel (none of that canon G12 wanna be crap) but have the camera look as if im a regular tourist. I am working with a $2000 budget. I am so confused by all the specs and especially the whole leica- panasonic debate! Please help! Thank you thank you thank you

ezc203 Posted February 23, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 23, 2012 What do you mean by "regular tourist"? I've seen "tourists" travel with 5Dii, Nikon D3s - so by "regular tourist" I assume you're looking for a small, pocketable point & shoot camera? Now is not the best time to buy camera, I'd wait at least until Leica announces their new products before anything. I would've recommend the X1 or DLUX5, but more likely than not, we'll be seeing updated versions of both cameras very soon.
andybarton Posted February 23, 2012 Share #3 Posted February 23, 2012 You're going to be waiting until September for news of any new cameras, in most likelihood.

dave_d Posted February 23, 2012 Share #5 Posted February 23, 2012 How about the x-1? In full frame you won't find a Leica product in your budget even if used.
johnwolf Posted February 23, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 23, 2012 There are now so many excellent mirrorless choices; Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Ricoh, Panasonic, Fuji.... Given your budget, I'd get up to speed on those options and their features and then handle them. I like the m4/3 concept and really enjoy using mine. And at the sizes I print I don't see any difference between prints from that system and the M9 and 5DII. I imagine the APS-C bodies would be comparable. NZDavid Posted February 24, 2012 Share #7 Posted February 24, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mirrorless APS is tempting, for example Panasonic GX-1 and assortment of lenses including a Leica Summilux. But the little D-Lux 5 is very capable, and small sensor quality has improved markedly. Main drawback is lack of shallow DOF. X1 has superb IQ but is limited to 35mm and AF is slow. Clearly a need for a new Leica EVIL camera. Perhaps a Leica M would suit? Radical suggestion: Leica M with film!
dickgrafixstop Posted March 2, 2012 Share #8 Posted March 2, 2012 By "travel camera" I presume you mean something small, functional, pocketable with good image quality. Several recommendations - Canon s100, Panasonic LX5, Leica DLux5 or Leica X1. All will give you excellent images, the first two are about $500, the DLux slightly less than $1000 or the X1 at $2000. Any of the first three are about the size of a pack of cigarettes (actually slimmer) and the last one is significantly larger, heavier, more limited and less functional. If you have big hands, big pockets and the size doesn't bother you, look at the new Fuji X10 at 1/3 the price. The LX5 and the DLux5 are basically the same camera and will probably be replaced within the next six months.
darylgo Posted March 2, 2012 Share #9 Posted March 2, 2012 My gut reaction to your inquiry is the Sony Nex, but the Leica X1 is also excellent, and as a compromise the Ricoh Gxr with Ricoh lenses or the A12 with Leica lenses. I have the Sony Nex 3 and love the pictures but the camera is plastic/menu driven. The Leica X1 is a camera I would like to own but I would rather put $2000 into a good lens or part way to a good lens. The Gxr is a solid camera that a serious photographer could enjoy for its quality and versatility.
