stunsworth Posted February 17, 2012 Share #21 Â Posted February 17, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Never bothered with one. The grip does everything I need. Often wondered about the 'protection' angle of these cases. Surely the areas on the camera where you'd want protection (if you felt it necessary) are the lens and the rangefinder mechanism, and a half case protects neither. Rick in CO Posted February 17, 2012 Share #23 Â Posted February 17, 2012 "So I wonder why you'd want to put up with yet another obstacle between you and the battery or memory card, in addition to the camera's baseplate (which I feel Leica could redesign to enable easier access via trapdoors without the necessity of having to totally remove the baseplate - but that's another story altogether). Â I also wonder about those of you who use tripods or monopods for support, do you then remove the case (unless you bought the Luigi half case which can be had electively with the screw for tripod mount)?"- Â I use a black Luigi half case on my black M9. With an 8-Gig Card I can shoot all day, or for several days by which time I have to refresh the battery anyway - no big inconvenience. I cut a hole in the bottom of the half case and placed a tripod adapter from a torn-up Leica screw mount case. Its one more thing to remove, but it makes the case more securely attached to the body - better when using the small bump grip (I don't have the larger handle-type grip). The half case provides the grip, a tripod mount and protection when I place it down on a rough or dirty surface. I've also removed the white paint from the "M9" and painted the red "Leica" disc black for additional anonymity.

peter_n Posted February 17, 2012 Share #27 Â Posted February 17, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a Zhou half case that I use on my MP film bodies when I'm shooting classical musicians. The idea is to muffle the shutter noise a bit. It works, but not as much as I'd like.
RockyIII Posted February 17, 2012 Share #28 Â Posted February 17, 2012 I use an Artisan & Artist half case. I like it for the added protection, and it helps me grip the camera better. Â Different strokes . . . Â Rocky

I like Welsh tarts myself - all leather and velvet, coos and purrs, roses and patchouli - but there is a lot to be (sniff, sniff) said for Italians. jim sink Posted February 17, 2012 Share #30 Â Posted February 17, 2012 I've wondered about those cases also. They don't protect the important features of the camera body. I think with the majority of owners the cases are just for show. I have used Canons and Nikons also for thirty-five years and never a half-case on any of them, I mean none, zip, never. So why now with all the interest in "half-cases" ? I can't figure this one out.

jbl Posted February 18, 2012 Share #32  Posted February 18, 2012 I use a Luigi case on my older bodies (M3, IIIf). I think my initial rationale was that they'd protect the vulcanite, but I just like how they feel. It makes the camera bigger—which I don't like—but Luigi's cases are so well made, they're a joy to use.  -jbl
Rick Posted February 18, 2012 Share #33 Â Posted February 18, 2012 I'm not totally certain why I have this irrational attraction to cameras in leather half cases. SJP Posted February 18, 2012 Share #35 Â Posted February 18, 2012 My original Leica half-case fulfills two important tasks: - it ensures the EU compliance etc. stickers to remain attached to the bottom plate - it gives the "vulcanite" additional wear - so some might see me as a "pro" Â ....... Keith (M) Posted February 18, 2012 Share #37  Posted February 18, 2012 It is a long time since I bothered with a camera case - long gone are the days of the 'ERC' being de-rigeur. Mind you I still have one for my elderly ME Super. In my 14 months or so of Leica ownership I have read all the many threads about who manufactures the best case, yada yada yada.  Anyway, in a moment of weakness and the desire to fondle leather again , I ordered a Mr Zhou M7/M4/M2 etc half-case and it arrived this morning. Apart from the tactile element, it was the inclusion of the front and rear grips plus the fact that it will fit both my M7 and M4 that prompted the decision. The result is a much more secure and comfortable grip on the camera and enhanced pleasure in usage. Highly recommended. Welcome, dear visitor! A grip is all I need and protection................I don't think the half case gives any protection to the topplate. ____________ FrankR
Peter H Posted February 18, 2012 Share #39 Â Posted February 18, 2012 Half-cases do look daft to me and spoil the look of the camera, but if you need them for practical purposes, that's a fair enough. Â I prefer my M9 naked: the smaller and lighter the better.
ayewing Posted February 18, 2012 Share #40 Â Posted February 18, 2012 When I am using my camera I prefer it without any case. When carrying it around I have a small black neoprene pouch which is stretchy enough to accomodate lenses up to Summilux 50mm size attached to the camera. This provides protection to the whole camera and lens from minor bumps and scrapes and also offers a degree of anonimity and discretion when in places where photography is not permitted. Â When the camera is in use I slip the pouch off, roll it up and put it in my pocket.
