It's about time to upgrade from my 15" G4 Powerbook to one of the new 17" Macbook Pros. Has anyone tried the new Glossy display ? I saw one a couple of weeks ago and the colors seemed richer and more alive, but there was more glare.

Any advise would be welcomed.

Thanks

Mark

I think you've answered your own question, glare is the issue with glossy displays, overhead lights or sunshine can cause havoc. Also richer colours of the glossy may be toned down if you calibrate your display which I would recommend highly for a controlled colour workflow.

A company in California called PortableOne.com can modify some laptops by inserting a special Mitubishi made film between the glass and the LCD. This makes it much more readbale in bright light. They offer their own models which have an optional TrioView display that works well in bright light and outdoors. It is even readable in direct sunlight, but of course you can't judge colors or exposure too well in that situation.

I have one of their own laptops with this display and it works quite well even though it has a glossy surface. They told me they might be able modify most Mac laptops. (You may need to persuade them as they mostly want to sell their own machines.) They send them to another place for this, but I don't know who they use. Maybe you could do the research and go directly to the source.

You'll have to email them to find out if they can modify a specific computer and what it will cost.

here is another place I swa on the internet that explains the technology. But I don't know if they will modify existing computers.

Glossy versus matte is a major issue on the various Mac fourms. For photographic purposes, the glossy screens are not supposed to be as color-accurate as the matte screens.
