Best way to get the new M10?

There must be an optimum time to buy.... maybe some bright spark has an algorithm that may help......

Clearly being at the front of the queue puts you in line for unsuspected manufacturing issues and ropey software.....

..... but missing the initial batches often means shortage and paying over the odds.....

and then again leaving it too late leaves you with a rapidly depreciating product that may be superseded at any time .....

and you will have missed out on the benefits of using it in your wait for things to settle down.....

a brief look at Nikon/Canon etc. suggests a 3-4 year major product cycle with the first year being a unedifying stampede to buy.....

so I suspect a year after launch is probably the optimum and leaves you with a good 2-3 years at least before what you have starts looking dated enough for you be tempted into changing....

That pretty much sums up why I just ordered a M9P ( an upgrade from M6s and the GXR ).

Hardware is as good as it's going to be and most of the firmware pains have gone.

Then it's 12 to 18 months till, even if September launched, a M10 would get into my hands.

Like ANY Leica product. Go to you favorite dealer, drop your name into a hat and chill...

mmm.... and in my experience the names are pulled out of the hat rather randomly..... if at all.....

I have 'allegedly' been on a well known Leica stockists 'list' on several occasions - only to find I don't exist when I have checked..... and been offered waiting list items when I have called in/phoned ..... clearly ahead of those on the mythical list ..... because a customer in the shop with money is clearly preferable to one on a 'list' that you can't contact.... and they quite candidly admitted that fact :o

If possible, change your preferred dealer in that situation. Ethics do still have a place in our society.

methinks you have a rather rosy view of the ethics of the retail trade...... particularly when times are hard ;)

.... I have never got any Leica product via waiting on a list....

.... even for the most esoteric and rare it has taken less than a few weeks of phoning/emailing around to get what I want.... often just a few days....

I was offered a noctilux 0.95 twice before I finally bought one on the third occasion...:)

I cannot understand anyone waiting 6-12 months for any Leica lens or camera body ... there are plenty out there if you are prepared to track them down......

Jaap, I think the deposit is a way of discouraging time wasters who put themselves on a multitude of waiting lists and then only take the first one that becomes available.

I don't know, I have never even been asked for a deposit. But then I tend to build up a good relationship with a few good dealers and they know me.

I can understand a deposit for an item that has to be ordered and is not easily moved if not taken, especially with an unknown customer. But to ask payment to get on a waiting list for a product that will be sold out for months after introduction appears like profiteering to me. As a customer I don't want to deal with a shop with that mentality.

I think it largely depends on where you are in the world.

In Australia, we tend to be the 'poor country cousin' who gets leftovers. Waiting lists are a fact of life here.

I have been lucky on several occasions. I got one of the first M8's and the first M9's to hit this country because I spoke up immediately and got to the head of the list. Subsequent orderer's waited up to 18 months to have supply dribble through. No deposit. Just my word, and a trusted dealer. It may seem rosy, but I see it as just an ethical agreement.

A couple of questions to all.

(1) Do Leica tend to announce new products way in advance of them becoming available to buy?

(2) Once the M10 is available, how long is it likely to be before someone with cash in their pocket - who has not pre-ordered or paid a deposit - will actually be able to buy? Or, to put it another way, how long is the waiting list likely to be?

Thanks, I realise that this isn't an exact science but your thoughts would be appreciated.

I did get one of the first M9-P released.. I knew one online-only Leica reseller here is very fast listing new products, Leica sent out the release email on 21 June and the day after I watched the reseller webpage. I knew they update products midday and I clicked the buy button half an hour after they put up the M9-P :p Not sure if this works elsewhere though..

Now when I already have the M9 I won't be in a hurry for any successor ;)

1. Differs - sometimes a long time before it actually becomes available - with the S2 and DMR it was years- sometimes like the M9 and M8 relatively short. Photokina tends to produce surprises.

2. If nobody is buying there is no waiting list - see the Digilux3- If the camera is a succes you can wait for months - and months - like the M8, M9 and many lenses.

I know it hasn't been announced yet, but when it is, I'd like to get one. The local dealer is lacking in some aspects and I don't trust they will get my order in on time.

The question is, can you guys recommend a good dealer that has their act together for preorders? I need someone who can ship within the EU. Many thanks!

Florian, you seem to have had a mixed bag reaction to your question and some not so nice at that too. I'd say not many dealers would know what and when Leica will be releasing later this year as I would think, Leica will be waiting for the Photokina camera show later this year to show of what will be launched, and I wouldn't think Leica would launch or announce the M? before then. I wouldn't give any dealer a deposit this early as you would be taking a big chance leaving a large sum of money in their hands. If they wet bust, you'd be left in a bit of a nightmare situation and could lose it all. What you could do, if you really want to guarantee an early buy, then I'd go to Leica and see if they would entertain taking a potential order from you but you might have to collect it from Germany and that would add to your costs. Can you say why you want to pay up this early especially when we do not know what might be released - you might find the next M may not be what you want or it might prove more expensive too.

Not sure why all the hate for the M10.. I love the M9 but the processor is sooooo slow. Shooting panoramas is very painful..If that's all the M10 had it would be a very welcome upgrade. Hoping for liveview too... makes my panoramas far easier, filter preview ect. Sometimes change is good.

Why would someone want to buy a camera that they have not seen and don't know the specs of? Are we so sure the M10 is going to be a better camera than the M9?

The original author is either a troll, or a non-photographer, perhaps a collector, in any event one who cares not a bit of what the M10 might be. He cares not whether it will be 'better' in any respect, he simply wants one. An idiot.

Troll is my best answer.

Pico, you may well be right; or wrong! Either way, using a term like 'idiot' towards a forum member ignores the requirement of respect. Because this is not just a conversation between you and him, but an International broadcast, we need to maintain a modicum of restraint, no matter what the perception is.

I confess I really don't understand the compulsion to be the first kid on the block with the latest and greatest. It's why it amuses me.

without any disrespect, i don't think he wants to be the first kid on the block...he probably just doesn't want to wait for a year or more after release before he finally finds one available for sale. buggy or beta-tested or not. remember the m9? wow, that was crazy...

my advice would be to get on several waiting lists and keep your ears to the ground.
