On my 50 mm Summarit I found that if i focus far away on infinity and looking through the viewfinder it does not get the images in the viewfinder and the focusing block perfectly on top of each other, there are always a double image. Lindolfi Posted February 15, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted February 15, 2012 [1] Double images in the photograph are not to be expected when you see double images in the rangefinder: this double image comes from the 2 ways of looking at the object through the main rangefinder window and the small one. The photographic image is formed through just one opening: the camera lens. Â [2] If you turn the lens to infinity and your images of very far away objects are sharp in the pictures, but you do not see alignment in the rangefinder of those objects ("double images"), your camera needs most likely adjustment. To be more certain, check other lenses. If more lenses show this effect, the more likely the camera needs adjustment. Â [3] Most likely this adjustment is the infinity setting, which is the bolt holding the roller wheel that rests on the lens cam when mounted. But it is possible you also need near readjustment. Â Even though the lenses were allegedly correctly adjusted, 4 were out of focus when set to infinity and have been back to Solms to be adjusted. Â Only a handful have the rangefinder images exactly aligned when the lens is set to infinity, and it also varies between the two bodies. Â Both bodies are adjusted to be accurate for near and infinity for my Noctilux, 50/1.4 and 75/2 which are the most critical lenses wide open. For the rest of my lenses its not much of an issue from a practical usage point of view. Â The fact that the rangefinder images do not exactly coincide when the lens is set to infinity is not an issue if the images are in focus when the lens is set manually to infinity or by aligning the rangefinder images. The depth of field at these distances allows a lot of leeway. Â In my opinion it is not possible to adjust all lenses and all rangefinder mechanisms to an accuracy that ensures that every lens and body will behave 'perfectly'. Â All that matters is that they are within a tolerance that allows in-focus images at all settings. Â I have spent months trying to achieve something that is clearly beyond the capabilities of the Leica M system and have given up worrying about it. Â If the pictures are OK, forget about it....
