leicamann Posted February 15, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 15, 2012 Nice shot.. I should add that its a European Robin as in the one seen in the movie " Secret Garden" but not the same as our " American Robin" which is much larger and has a more flute like sing song. Always try to keep in mind that a digital cameras weakness is the lack of bokeh, so the background which is better fadded and melded into a colour pattern is all highlighted and detailed, which distracts from your subject, the robin, there are tools in Photoshop 5 that can enable you to overcome this, of course the better option is to use an actual telephoto lens that automatically knocks out the background. Thanks for sharing Cheers, JRM

euston Posted February 16, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted February 16, 2012 Bob, K-H, leicamann, Dopaco, thank you very much. You’re quite right, leicamann. This is Erithacus rubecula, a completely different bird from the North American Robin. This is the one that the RSPB describes as the UK’s favourite bird. This individual lives in our Hampshire garden and was photographed from the kitchen window. It’s true that excessive depth of field can be a problem with small sensor cameras such as the V-Lux 1 but, in this case, I actually stopped down slightly in order to preserve some definition in the berberis behind the bird. My expectation was that the bright colour of the bird would make it stand out sufficiently from the dark green background without the need for very much background blur. allamande Posted February 16, 2012 Share #10 Posted February 16, 2012 Robert, This is lyrical and cute as a button! I love the fact that you show her/him in context rather than against a blur, because the second thing my eyes took in were the patches of snow in the background (connecting with the light patch on the bird nicely), and that information told a much fuller story (for me), creating a dynamic image.
