albertknappmd Posted February 26, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will be ordering the WATE in the near future and am interested in knowing whether one needs a B+W regular F-Pro filter ring mount or will the SLIM version be required. Mark Norton had an excellent thread on the distance between filter and front element but did not touch on the width of the filter. Any ideas... Advertisement Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Hi albertknappmd, Take a look here Wate Filter Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted February 26, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 26, 2007 Albert, for the M8, I don't think it will matter because the diameter of the filter is set to avoid vignetting when using film. The M8 crop factor reduces the angle of view so that there should not be any problem with the filter mount getting in the way. I think though that you'd find the slimline filter will make for a slightly neater package. Â I've order one of the 67mm filters from Leica as one of my free filters and it will be interesting to see what filter mount it comes in.
dannirr Posted February 26, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 26, 2007 Remember - ti use the 67 mm filter you need the filter holder for the WATE - which has cutouts to prevent viewfider obsucring - and these cutouts cause reflective problems. Â See the example I posted in the WATE/486 Horribles thread. Â Â Danni
albertknappmd Posted February 26, 2007 Author Share #4 Â Posted February 26, 2007 Mark- I thank you for the insight but are you sure the WATE was designed for the M6 and 7... Do we really know that either a regular or a slim filter will not cause vignetting with a full frame composition as opposed to a cropped version for the m8? Danni- I agree and saw the thread... Perhaps we can have SK GRIMES look at the filter adaptor and posibly design a better alternative or Leica will realize that they should redesign the front of the WATE and incorporate filters into the lens shade as is done with the 28PC where the filter is screwed into the lens hood. marknorton Posted February 26, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 26, 2007 Albert, the lens was definitely designed for full-frame use and my calculations show the filter is fine but in that case, I'd use the slimline filter. I've just tried it on my M6 with a ground glass screen that it looked fine. Â I'm working on modifying the standard offering to include the filter glass in the lens hood; the problem is that at 16mm, the front lens element protrudes forward through where you'd want the filter to be so that the hood has to be moved forwards about 8 -10 mm of it's normal position. This WILL cause vignetting on film but should be OK on an M8. Â I've been in touch with SK Grimes but I'm waiting to be able to give them more information. That thread on the front of the lens is non-standard and there's a rubber O-ring which is what tightens things up as you reach the end of the thread travel. Â All Leica need to do is to release an alternative lens hood for M8 use with the filter glass pre-mounted, maybe charge $250 for it and we'd be all set. albertknappmd Posted February 26, 2007 Author Share #6 Â Posted February 26, 2007 Glad to hear about the filter but would the regular B+W F-Pro mount be acceptable or MUST I switch to the SLIM version? Can I also use the regualr F-pro mount for film purposes (ie full frame) or must I use SLIM there. Since YOU have the WATE, you can tell us! I agree with a Leica re-design but.... steve_l Posted February 26, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted February 26, 2007 What the WATE really needs is simply a filter holder that attaches to the WATE thread and takes a 55mm filter (as with the 21mm lens for film) and then accepts the hood from the 21mm....a pretty simple solution, I'd say. Make it just look like a 21mm lens and all will be fine for the M8...
marknorton Posted February 27, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted February 27, 2007 Steve, that's an interesting alternative... The 21mm hood is quite a bit bigger than the WATE hood (67*55mm, 57*44mm) but it would certainly be easier to put together if Leica don't do anything. Thanks for sharing! steve_l Posted February 27, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted February 27, 2007 Mark- You and I seem to be the ones figuring out how to solve this, maybe Leica will hear one of these ideas and do it, or maybe we'll have to get it done ourselves.... Â Are you talking the the SK Grimes in Boston? That is where I am much of the time, I could go there with a WA TE if tht would help...(Leica says mine will arrive sometime in the next two months)
marknorton Posted February 27, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted February 27, 2007 Steve, I have been in contact with them but I'm waiting for the filter holders to arrive so that I can progress my prototype and so be more specific about what I want from them. I think having sight of your lens and my prototype will clarify things...
Guest guy_mancuso Posted February 27, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted February 27, 2007 Mark they did some work for me converting a Olympus 24 shift lens to a Leica R mount , they are nice folks and are very resourceful. If this work please tell them to hold onto the design of this for more customers
cbretteville Posted February 27, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted February 27, 2007 SKGrimes milled out a 69-77 stepup for the D2 and were shipping it long before Leica had a propper product in place. They're not cheap, but deliver top quality. And they're real easy to deal with - also for an intl. customer. - C
