Bag Choice: Hadley Digital vs. Combination M

My Black Combination bag is so elegant! eventhough it is made by Billingham for Leica, I feel it is a notch better than Billingham in terms of quality and elegance.

And the way the camera is held (upside down lens facing down) this leaves the right and left storage areas for another lens or film.

I can fit my flash in the zippered pocket in front, very handy for anything really.

Go with the Combination, you will not regret it.

I use the Hadley Small. One lens is on the body and the other is in its case. There's enough room for an extra battery, external viewfinder and film if desired. Be sure to get the shoulder pad since the strap tends to slide off the shoulder.

Really? I've examined a few Combination M bags over the past couple months and have been quite let down by Billingham's quality control. Broken stitches and pulls in the canvas seem par for the course. I've resigned myself to buying a bag with as few flaws as possible as opposed to one that is as it should be.

I use Hadley small & the Combi, but i prefer the Hadley because of the darted main flap which covers the mouth of the bag better then the Combi. Handley Digital has the same flap as the Hadley Small. I gues the Combi has more space.

When I want to carry a minimal outfit, I take a Hadley Small and use the main part of the interior to carry a camera plus lens, and use one of the dividers shipped with the case to create a small compartment able to carry a second lens, and a second and third lenses mounted back-to-back on an OpTech double rear cap.

Spare battery, memory cards, external finder, lens brush etc go into the front pockets.

I always carry the bag slung across my body with the strap passing over the shoulder opposite the side that the bag is against, so have had no problem with strap slippage.

Best regards,

Doug

This topic will run, and run, and run as the tension between wanting a small bag, against the desire to take your lenses with you will never die.

Looking at Paul's bag (he has the 50 & 35 Summilux), I can't help but think this is a perfect combination, which would fit my M bag well (or leave me space in my Monochrom mono_9, which is always a good thing). But then, I think, having a 21 would be good to round this out. So, perfect, 50, 35, 21.

But then I think of the 75/2 sitting in my drawer, and the 28/2 is really nice, and really small, and I either end up taking one lens, or I take far too many in an overcrowded bag, and I fool around changing lenses in the worst places, and I miss the shot I wanted.

So, think about being a photographer (few lenses, and making the most of the gear you have chosen for the day) or being a gear freak (having everything and seeing your photography suffer).

For my next big trip (Europe for a month in July), I will take four Leica lenses (50-35-21) and my NEX-5n (with the 75). But, I will almost certainly only carry one lens and a spare if I go out to take pictures (either 50-28 or 75-35, with the 21 coming only when I know there's a good chance I'll use it).

The Billingham Combination M is the better choice as it's discrete, rugged, reasonably weather proof, and it's no bigger than I really need.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

John
