Paul J Posted February 10, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted February 10, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) While searching for lenses I seem to find Canadian made Leica lenses relatively cheaper to their german made counterparts. Is there any difference in quality associated with these lenses?
Advertisement Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Hi Paul J, Take a look here German Made Leica v Canadian made Leitz. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted February 10, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted February 10, 2012 The Canadian lenses tend to have sticky maple syrup finger marks on them, thus giving less resolution. Â German lenses have a tendancy to show strudel crumbs, less of a problem and less likely to affect the images. Â Other than that there's no difference at all. Collectors like the word 'Germany' stamped on their Leica stuff.
Guest Posted February 10, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted February 10, 2012 "Reimporting" a german lens bought in the States or Canada you might get less problems at the border...
peter_n Posted February 10, 2012 Share #4  Posted February 10, 2012 Is there any difference in quality associated with these lenses? In my experience, no. My Noctilux and Summicron 90 are stellar. Additionally many classic Leica lenses were designed in Canada as well as made there. Collectors like the word 'Germany' stamped on their Leica stuff. And there you have it. jneilt Posted February 10, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted February 10, 2012 In short, no. Â In not so short, there was a time when lenses were made with poly helicals (inside) and lubricant failure and gassing were common. I own one of these lenses (it's made in Canada-90 cron) and it shot great photos with a slight haze of lube on the inside of the rear element. It is off getting fixed now! Â I don't think the issue is related to where it was made or by who. Â Also, with some offerings, it had to be made in Canada...there is no German option. RobSkeoch Posted February 10, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted February 10, 2012 I would imagine the Canadian lenses would be better for shooting hockey while the German lenses would be better for skiing.
