Summicron V4

IWC Doppel

The Canadian ones are naturally older, and thus may be more prone to the effects of aging (congealed grease, stiff (or loose) parts). There was a change in the style of the focus tab sometime during the Canadian run, from original convex ribbed focus tab to concave smooth finger notch.

In 2003 or so I happened to run across a very late NOS German v.4 still in a shop. It was absolutely identical to my 1983 Canadian in every respect, including the colors and density of the coatings, imaging qualities, feel, etc. Except for the location and style of engraving.

I've seen a couple late German versions where the rear grouping was coming decemented (looked like concentric rainbow-colored circles when looking at the rear element), and several where the front part of the lens came off due to the glue (yes, no screws) that holds it in place failing as a result of someone grabbing it by the lens shade to mount and dismount it. My copy is a Canadian (later, with the concave finger tab) and it's perfect. Given the optical formula is the same, I suspect that the most important factor is how the lens has been treated by its former owner(s).
