StephenPatterson Posted February 7, 2012 Share #1  Posted February 7, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) In looking at one of the images I captured last weekend at Steve Huff's LA Workshop I was amazed at the detail that was captured with the 50 Summilux ASPH on my M9. The first image was cropped approx 30% to remove distractions in the background, and the 2nd image is pretty close to a 100% crop of that image. I was standing about 5ft-6ft from these two men, but I would have never expected to capture a fingerprint.  This is probably old hat to most here, but it just really caught me off guard. I don't know why I'm surprised, but I guess it's nice to see that I'm getting my money's worth from Leica glass.  Welcome, dear visitor! swamiji Posted February 7, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted February 7, 2012 You certainly are! This lens is on the top of my next to purchase list. Â P.S. Great shot
nic Posted February 7, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted February 7, 2012 What was the aperture?
wda Posted February 7, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted February 7, 2012 It certainly is most impressive. I have mostly used mine indoors by available light at full aperture with stunning results. Tricky to focus accurately at close quarters, but I make allowance for that.
LotharZhou Posted February 7, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted February 7, 2012 without doubt the best standard lens I even used, even wide open for infinite landscape, still pretty sharp and full of details.

StephenPatterson Posted February 8, 2012 Author Share #8 Â Posted February 8, 2012 This image was shot at f/11 as I was zone focusing for street photography. The guy on the right was really high and moving around a lot. He was desperate for a cigarette, which the gentleman on the left was not interested in sharing. I only got off a couple of frames, then went to open up a bit and refocus, when they took off. Â The images was converted in B&W in Silver Efex Pro 2, but no extreme PP or sharpening. IWC Doppel Posted February 8, 2012 Share #9  Posted February 8, 2012 Great Pic  I was amazed at the pictures my friends M9 and 50 Lux came up with, particularly capturing light in a very 'touchable' way. A vert 'real' look without being clinical.  Can you stop talking about this lens please I am hoping to pick one up secondhand this year

Rick Posted February 8, 2012 Share #11 Â Posted February 8, 2012 Steve, I've had that lens for about six years now and it often surprises me. For example, my wife shoots our 5D and 5DII when we are out taking pictures, often with the Canon 50mm 1.4. In comparison to the 50Lux, the Canon is horrible. But, of course, there is a HUGE difference in price. I consider the Canon 50/1.4 more of a "kit" lens then anything else. Maybe someone can tell me why Canon doesn't make a better 50/1.4 (a sort of flagship type lens for a manufacturer)? Â You are going to find that the 50Lux just helps you make amazing photos. And, at night it is sublime.
Double Negative Posted February 9, 2012 Share #12 Â Posted February 9, 2012 That's insane. Well done! Â I feel the same way; it never ceases to amaze.

Maybe someone can tell me why Canon doesn't make a better 50/1.4 (a sort of flagship type lens for a manufacturer)? Â Since 2007, Canon's flagship 50 has been the 50/1.2L (interesting review & photos on this site). It faired very well in the recent LensRentals.com "Great 50mm Shootout". The Canon 50/1.4 is a design from 1993, is priced more like a kit lens, and is probably due for an update.
Ecaton Posted February 9, 2012 Share #14  Posted February 9, 2012 This image was shot at f/11 as I was zone focusing for street photography. I only got off a couple of frames, then went to open up a bit and refocus, when they took off. The images was converted in B&W in Silver Efex Pro 2, but no extreme PP or sharpening.  It depends which of the pre-settings you used in silver efex pro. Some obviously include heavy handed PP. I like the end result, but there was quite some PP involved.
