jacksparrow Posted February 25, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all!, Anyone using Zeiss Biogon T* 2,8/25 ZM? I've read that it's much better than the similar Biogon 28 mm. How do they compare with the new Elmarit 28/2.8 ASPH? I'm looking for a wide angle complement to my MP+50 mm, and either of these biogons seem like a good choice: cheaper than Summilux 35, which I can't afford at this point, and both available in chrome, which is a big plus, since I can't sacrifice the coolness factor :-) otherwise I might try the new Elmarit 28/2.8 ASPH by Leica. So my question is this: anyone using the 25 mm without the external viewfinder? is it practical using it looking through the built-in viewfinder? I know there's more space in my picture than what I will actually frame, but really that much? is there that big optical quality difference between the 25 and the 28? Thanks to all! Advertisement Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Hi jacksparrow, Take a look here anyone using Biogon T* 2,8/25 ZM?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
peter_n Posted February 25, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 25, 2007 You do need the external VF. However no need to buy the Zeiss, get the CV which is more than adequate - I use it with the Leica 24/2.8 and it is excellent. Sorry I can't comment on the ZM lenses but if you don't get too many responses here there is a forum on RFF that is dedicated to the ZI & it's lenses. Do a search within that forum and you should be all set.
jacksparrow Posted February 25, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted February 25, 2007 Thanks Peter... I guess it's non-leica, but since they're made for it I imagined a few people would have used them. Will do a search, thanks again.

LJL Posted February 27, 2007 Share #5 Posted February 27, 2007 Jack, A bit late to your "party" here, but thought to chime in a bit. I have the 25/2.8 and use it on my M8. The images it draws are pretty spectacular. The edge sharpness is the most impressive I have seen from most wider angle lenses. It has a lot more contrast, which can be good or bad, depending on your style of shooting. The downside is that it pulls up the 28mm framelines in the M8, but I just ignore them and shoot most of the finder. Zeiss is doing a retrofit of the mount to correspond with the Leica 24mm framelines for the M8, from what I read elsewhere, but I have no pursued this yet. The 25/2.8 is a very impressive lens, and it was the first lens I bought as I got back into M stuff after a very long hiatus. I am just waiting on a 46mm UV/IR filter now, and hopes that M8 firmware update 1.10 may permit some cyan drift options for color work. For B/W work, the lens is outstanding as is. Sorry I cannot compare to film applications, but this is a great lens for the money. LJ

el fotografo Posted February 28, 2007 Share #8 Posted February 28, 2007 I have the ZI 28 (in chrome) and it's a great lens. I previously had the CV 25, which is a nice lens for the price, however I grew tired of using the finder and not having parallax correction with my M6. The 25 was also a little too wide for my needs. I was originally thinking of upgrading to the ZI 25 but when I came across a demo 28 I went for it. The 28 works well for travel, street work, interiors, etc. and having built-in framelines simplifies things. The 28 is also a little shorter than the 25, if size is a concern. I don't think you can go wrong with either one; it all depends on how you want to use it. Flickr has a group for each lens if you're interested in seeing images. grober Posted February 28, 2007 Share #9 Posted February 28, 2007 I have a black one, in pristine condition, with lens hood + B+W UV filter available for sale. Interested? PM me for photo and details. The ONLY reason I'm selling is due my increased need to use glasses whilst shooting. I can't stretch my eyeballs any longer to see the 24mm frame so I've decided to make 28mm my w. a. of choice. The 25 ZM will always be a fantastic lens, IMHO. -g
LJL Posted February 28, 2007 Share #10 Posted February 28, 2007 Has anyone heard when this might happen? Any more information? Cheers, Wilfredo Benitez-Rivera Photography Wilfredo, I did a quick search on the forum and turned up this thread from November: http://www.leica-camera-user.com/digital-forum/10354-somebody-has-proven-zeiss-ikon-biogon.html?highlight=Zeiss+25%2F2.8+lens+mount+M8 Since then, I recall Sean or somebody else commenting that Zeiss would do the lens mount exchange for something like 40-80 euros, as I recall. I have not been able to confirm that amount or operation. All this will do is pull up the more correct 24mm framelines for the M8, but there still remains the issue of being able to code the lense as the Leica 24/2.8 or the 21/2.8. This is all I recall seeing lately. Might be worth an email to Zeiss. I would think they would love to sell more lenses. LJ
