The day before yesterday I ordered an M8. As most of you I was enthusiastic when the M8 was announced for the Photokina but - unfortunately - reluctand to be an early adopter (unfortunately because not only I lost already 3 months or so but also the rebate for lenses slipped off my hands :-)).

Owning an M6 since end of the 80ies and buying lenses from that time up to the middle 90ies all my lenses are pre asph. I own the following:

21/2.8; 35/2.0; 50/1.0 and 1.4. and 2.0 and 2.8; 90/2.0; 135/2.8.

Together with the M8 I have ordered the 75 asph.

Now here is my question: Although I am pleased with the quality of the lenses I have I am not quite sure whether I should replace one or two of the other lenses (except for the 50/1.0 and 2.0). I am sure there are people in this forum using the older and also the modern lenses. Any recommendation would be highly appreciated.

You certainly have a fine set of lenses!

 

I would consider getting the 35/1.4 asph, since 35 mm could easily become your standard focal length given the 1.33 crop factor. Your 35/2.o is probably the 4th generation, the socalled bokeh king, so you might consider keeping it if you can afford it instead of trading it.

 

The 24/2.8 would probably also be worth considering, since the M8 has a frameline for it.

Don't exchange your old lenses. they are at least as good as they are on film M's, even better because the problematic outer edges/corners are cropped off and the character shines through brilliantly. Should you feel the need for another, newer lens, you can always buy that later.

Thanks jaapv and Michael for your recommendations. And yes, looking at your webside, jaapv, and especiallyat the incredible "M8 feel good" threat you know thatb this will push a lot of people towards the M8.

 

Let me ask the question again, mabe it was not clear from the first post:

Does anybody use pre asph and asph lenses of the same focal length on the M8?

I use a Summarit, a Elmar-M 2.8 and a Tri-Elmar in the 50 mm range.

The 35 mm are a Summaron 3.5 and a Summicron asph.

 

 

I find they all have their unique character and their own uses. All have their own place in the toolbox. But I repeat: try it out before spending your money
