JazzDoc Posted February 2, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is it done? Or is this heresy or "gauche"?
Advertisement Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Hi JazzDoc, Take a look here So what about silver/chrome Leica lenses on black M9's?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
NZDavid Posted February 2, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 2, 2012 Silver/chrome lenses work perfectly on both black and chrome bodies, and results look identical.
ezc203 Posted February 2, 2012 Share #3 Posted February 2, 2012 If you're worried about aesthetics, don't. http://www.marcoryanphotography.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/HCB.jpg http://www.henricartierbresson.org/images/hcb_portrait.jpg I actually kind of like it. Practically though, I like my camera equipment to be as black as possible. Eliminates the off chance of catching a reflection or something (I shoot into mirrors/windows a lot)
StephenPatterson Posted February 2, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 2, 2012 Have a look at this thread... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/215718-mismatched-finishes-done.html
Messsucherkamera Posted February 2, 2012 Share #5 Posted February 2, 2012 Having lenses and bodies that are not "correctly" color coordinated is a non-issue IMHO. Put a black lens on a chrome body or a chrome lens on a black body and click away - after all, the film in the camera doesn't know the difference! tobey bilek Posted February 2, 2012 Share #8 Posted February 2, 2012 So what about silver/chrome Leica lenses on black M9's? So what about not worrying?
JazzDoc Posted February 2, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted February 2, 2012 So what about silver/chrome Leica lenses on black M9's? So what about not worrying? I'm just asking. And today I learned that the barrels are made of different materials - worth a post right there. Thanks.
bpalme Posted February 2, 2012 Share #10 Posted February 2, 2012 I try to only buy black. I have a Silver M9 so it's mismatched I guess... but I think it's easier to sell black lenses if I end up doing that. Prefer lighter too!
IWC Doppel Posted February 2, 2012 Share #11 Posted February 2, 2012 I really like black lenses on silver bodies and think silver lenses on black bodies look especially different and cool But then again I coloured my mag alloys black on my RS before it was 'in' and everyone thought it was here heresy in 97. I am not mad on silver on silver or black on black..... I prefer the mismatch, maybe it's my insecurity and the 'need' be different or lack of style ! spylaw4 Posted February 2, 2012 Share #12 Posted February 2, 2012 It's neither heresy or gauche it's all the same optical cell. It you don't mind the extra weight, use chrome. Me, as I get older, I want lighter equipment which mean black and fewer lenses.
IWC Doppel Posted February 2, 2012 Share #13 Posted February 2, 2012 Oh and if I won the lottery I would be very tempted to get a silver noctilux and black M9-P .....
IWC Doppel Posted February 2, 2012 Share #14 Posted February 2, 2012 I'm just asking. And today I learned that the barrels are made of different materials - worth a post right there. Thanks. Yes the silver are all brass or brass alloy based as opposed to an aluminium based alloy for the external parts.
philipus Posted February 2, 2012 Share #15 Posted February 2, 2012 With the Barnacks in mind, I guess one could argue that silver/chrome lenses on black bodies is the original way. For me it comes down to weight and I'm in the process of changing my lenses to black. I also like the less eye-catching effect of the black vs the chrome. That said, chrome on black is really nice. Deliberate1 Posted February 2, 2012 Share #16 Posted February 2, 2012 Mark, I posed this question some months ago, as per a link above. Since then I have found a silver 50mm Summilux and 35mm Zeiss for my black M9. I am quite smitten by the two-toned look. I also have this unfounded theory that such a camera may be less of a target for an erstwhile camera thief who may think a mismatched set the sign of a pauper. Finally, check out this link. Apparently, Leica thought the black and silver combination suitable for a special edition M6 for Vaclav Havel - that is, unless they too, like the rest of us, had a problem finding any Leica lenses in stock, let alone ones that match. I greatly appreciate your thoughtful and informational response (as well as those who've responded already). Wonderful forum here. Makes me happy, now that I'm a Leica newbie, to be amongst you and to be able to pick your brains. Now does anyone have a cure for this G.A.S. syndrome? StephenPatterson Posted February 2, 2012 Share #18 Posted February 2, 2012 Now does anyone have a cure for this G.A.S. syndrome? Mark Yes, time and money... I just received a 35 Summilux ASPH FLE that I've been waiting on for over 6 months. In the world of Leica lens deliveries that's not too bad. My M9-P is silver chrome, and I absolutely do not care what color lens I mount, as long as they deliver excellent performance. My 35 Summicron ASPH, 50 Summilux ASPH and 90 Elmarit M lenses are silver chrome, but my 18SEM, 21SEM and new 35 Summilux are all black. The silver chrome lenses are a little heavier, but not so much that I really notice. Also the built in lens hoods on the silver chrome lenses have a heavier, more positive feel when being extended. None of this matters when it comes to the image, however. Welcome to the forum, please continue to contribute, and never be afraid to ask questions (even if you do receive the occasional caustic reply)!!! Deliberate1 Posted February 2, 2012 Share #19 Posted February 2, 2012 Now does anyone have a cure for this G.A.S. syndrome? Mark, happy to help. As for a "cure," far be it for me to offer you medical or existential advice for GAS - but I will. Take two doses of "Summaalox" - either the 50mm or 35mm tab, and find your nearest Leica Anonymous chapter. "Hi, I'm Mark and I have GAS." That ought to do it. You will feel much better, doc. David PS: Check the DSM IV for more agggressive treatment....
