satureyes Posted February 1, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 1, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had an email today from my leica dealer to tell me that if I want they have a 21mm Super Elmar in stock and can be put aside for me. Problem is - I am also awaiting delivery of a 35 'lux which I have only paid a deposit for. So I am so so tempted - it would complete my collection eventually (for now) and it would be the following: 21 super elmar 35 'lux 75 'cron Problem is - I'm an event shooter and need low light performance - BUT I love wides too and the use of perspective. Will I be disappointed with the f3,4 max aperture? I know the lens has had some amazing reviews - but it's those couple of stops that make all the difference- but it's a keenly priced lens and it's very tempting.. Any thoughts? Advertisement Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Hi satureyes, Take a look here Apple of temptation has been dangled in front of my eyes. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted February 2, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 2, 2012 Are you only lusting after it just because it happens to be available. Or to put it another way, if your dealer had every lens on his shelves is it something you would even look at twice?
01af Posted February 2, 2012 Share #3 Posted February 2, 2012 Where's the problem? Get both and then be done with lens purchases.
satureyes Posted February 3, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted February 3, 2012 I'm just trying to assertain if. F3.4 would be a limiting factor in making the purchase. I have been scouring the web and can't find many opinions about If this would or wouldn't be the case.

Yes because i want a lovely wide angle lens to compliment my other lenses but want to make sure it's going to work for me. I was also offered the. 50lux but turned it down- it's not lust. It's making an educated purchase. ;-)

The 21/3.4 Super Elmar M is an amazing lens, and can be used wide open with little distortion while staying sharp in the corners. And as you are probably aware the 21mm focal length can be hand held at much slower shutter speeds than a 35 or 50. I routinely shoot mine at 1/15 with very acceptable results. If money is no object, you don't mind the extra size and weight, and you need the speed, then go for the 21 Summilux. For everyone else the 21SEM is a fantastic lens and a great balance of price and performance.

At the moment I tend to shoot interiors on my canons- at around 16mm sometimes iso3200 and f2.8 to get a useable handheld shot of a room prob with a ss of around 1/60 or just under. Im wondering if this would be transposed down to the m9. Assuming I don't rise above iso1600 and a stop less then it would be around 1/15th - have I worked that out right?
