I´m not sure Solms is worth a trip, there is normally nothing to see except a small exhibition in the leica shop. If you want to see more you have to join a guided tour. But these are only available by prior appointment!

About that travel book guide: Why is nearly every US travel guide book advising only to visit the southern part? What about Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, the Baltic sea coast? Is it only due to the former US-zone of occupation after the war or what?

Nearly every US travel book is aimed at suburban American tourists with 1 or 2 week vacations and who speak nothing but English (and whose preconceptions of Europe come from TV and the movies :D). That's why Rick Steves (again, I swear, he's not paying me!) has been so successful with his "Through the Back Door" approach. Hamburg you mention, for example, is a must-see for anyone who's a Beatles fan, but like Liverpool, probably isn't going to appeal all that much to someone who isn't.

I think (as a german) that the reason for recommendatons of Germanys south is, that there is maybe the "picture in the head" of "typical Germany" like beer garden, "Gemuetlichkeit" :D, old town and nice barock churches, mountains.

In fact, also that attracts many german tourists also ;)

Means not that the northeren area ist not so nice - e.g. I like Berlin, it is an tremendously active, amazing young-old city! Also the former east german provinces like saxonia are beautiful, also cities like Dresden and Leipzig. Would be good to have enough time to go to several regions were you may see the people have very different mentalities, behaviours, style and culture.

Only to visit south is sure only visiting a part. But a beautiful part, I have to say ;)

(by the way: I live in Southwest - Black forest next to France and Suisse

Greetings

Thomas

Well, that's quite narrow thinking, don't you think? ;)

Hey, don't shoot the messenger :p The subject was USA guidebooks. Europe has enough castles and palaces that, given the short time most Americans have to travel, blue-collar towns aren't likely to make the final cut on their itineraries unless they have a specific draw, like for example the link with Beatles' history. Same thing if Europeans come to the USA, they're probably not likely to head for Cooperstown, NY unless they're fans of baseball.

It's highly likely that the contract will exclude using the car for motor sports. If you have an accident you will have to pay for any repairs yourself.

Steve- great advice indeed. I track my Porsche a couple times a year and it requires expensive supplemental insurance. I'm hearing so many great ideas and nice places to visit that maybe Solms and the Ring need to be further down on the list ;) at least this time anyway.
