adelie Posted January 21, 2012 Share #1  Posted January 21, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a 21 mm. Super Angulon f/3.4 that I use on my Leica M4-P. I also have a Leica M5 (just love it in spite of all the negative comments about this model). The 21 mm SA f/3.4 will not fit on the M5 without modifications.  My question - Is it safe to put the new 21 mm SE f/3.4 on the Leica M5? I think so but would like some confirmation from someone who is using this combination.  Thanks again  John Falloon

Michael Geschlecht Posted January 21, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Hello John, Â Welcome to the Forum. Â Not everyone thinks negatively of the M5. Â To date: Â Unequaled Shutter speed dial in an M. Â Unequaled narrow angle meter in an M. Â Just to begin. Â Enjoy. Â Best Regards, Â Michael
adan Posted January 22, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted January 22, 2012 Michael - did you read the original question? Â John, yes the new Elmar should work fine on the M5. It has the same longer space behind the back element needed for ttl metering on ANY M, and thus won't hit the M5 meter arm. Â See the side view here for comparison to your SA: Leica Camera AG - Photography - NEW: LEICA SUPER-ELMAR-M 1:3,4/21 mm ASPH. Â Do keep in mind that a 21mm is going to "see" a lot more scenery (e.g. sky), so the M5's meter area will be less "narrow" with the 21 than with longer lenses. As I recall, the M5 are is marked as "( )" for the 50mm lens. For a 21, it will be 2.5x as big a circle - a circle that would contain the whole 90mm frame. Michael Geschlecht Posted January 22, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted January 22, 2012 Hello Andy, Â Thank you. Â Yes, I did read the original question & was not answering it. What I was doing was letting John know he did not have any reason to apologize for his M5 because all of the M's are good cameras. Â An M5's meter measures a wider angle w/ a wider angle'd lens as is the case w/ all M's. Nonetheless an M5's meter subtends a smaller angle w/ any lens than any other M. Sometimes that's useful. Â That's what I was trying to say. Â Best Regards, Â Michael
