LeicaPassion Posted January 21, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yesterday my favorite dealer called. The 21 SE has just arrived and I was first on the list! I had to pass on it to keep a happy household. Whoever was second on the list must be thrilled. The lens is beginning to arrive in the US. Advertisement Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Hi LeicaPassion, Take a look here 21mm f3.4 in the US. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
StephenPatterson Posted January 21, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted January 21, 2012 I've had mine for about two months now, and it's a stellar lens. Anyone who is lucky enough to get one will not be disappointed. Â Here's a photo from this week, taken with the 21/3.4 SEM Â
algrove Posted January 21, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted January 21, 2012 I got mine about 2-3 weeks after Stephen. They definitely in country.
Double Negative Posted January 21, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted January 21, 2012 Another awesome shot there, Stephen! Â I've been eyeing this lens myself. It's a little slower than I generally prefer but the compact size (and 46mm filter threads) have me seriously considering it.
budrichard Posted January 21, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted January 21, 2012 I don't understand why with perfectly good 21mm f2.8 ASPH lenses available, why the want for this lens? It is cost or some other factor or for individuals that don't want to purchase a used lens?-Dick

A quick search for used Elmarits on KEH and Adorama, has them listed for 300-500 USD more than a brand new f3.4. Perhaps secondary to the cost is the form factor (Elmarit is larger).  Savvas

Can anybody confirm this based on practical use?
Double Negative Posted January 21, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted January 21, 2012 The 2,8/21 is a fine lens. But it's much larger in the front for one thing - newer E55 or older E60. If you use filters a lot and have some other lenses it's another consideration, plus if you don't need the speed... Optically, I believe - the SE is supposed to be superior. StephenPatterson Posted January 21, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted January 21, 2012 The speed of the 21 SEM at f/3.4 has not been an issue for me (compared to my previous 21/2.8 Zeiss Biogon) because this is such an easy lens to hand hold. I've hand held shots slower than 1/15 that came out great. I've also been experimenting with hand holding the 21 and taking multiple exposures for HDR photos (don't tell Andy Barton) and the results have surprised me in a very positive way. I may still not be a big fan of HDR, but the ability to use it for an interior shot can sometimes be much easier than spending a ton of time dodging and burning in Lightroom or Photoshop. Â My Zeiss 21/2.8 was roughly the same size and weight as my 50 Summilux ASPH, while the new 21 SEM is roughly the same size and weight as my 35 Summicron ASPH. This makes it much easier for me to handle. Â Again, not to get off on a HDR tangent but if I can hand hold the 21SEM in a dim cathedral for seven exposures and put them together in HDR Efex and get images like this then the lens is fast enough for me.
