I don't understand why with perfectly good 21mm f2.8 ASPH lenses available, why the want for this lens?

It is cost or some other factor or for individuals that don't want to purchase a used lens?-Dick

Hi Dick,

I think because the 21mm f2.8 ASPH is more expensive. A quick search for used Elmarits on KEH and Adorama, has them listed for 300-500 USD more than a brand new f3.4. Perhaps secondary to the cost is the form factor (Elmarit is larger).

From what I heard it is supposed to have less distortion and is more resistant to flares than the 2.8. Can anybody confirm this based on practical use?

The speed of the 21 SEM at f/3.4 has not been an issue for me (compared to my previous 21/2.8 Zeiss Biogon) because this is such an easy lens to hand hold. I've hand held shots slower than 1/15 that came out great. I've also been experimenting with hand holding the 21 and taking multiple exposures for HDR photos (don't tell Andy Barton) and the results have surprised me in a very positive way. I may still not be a big fan of HDR, but the ability to use it for an interior shot can sometimes be much easier than spending a ton of time dodging and burning in Lightroom or Photoshop.

My Zeiss 21/2.8 was roughly the same size and weight as my 50 Summilux ASPH, while the new 21 SEM is roughly the same size and weight as my 35 Summicron ASPH. This makes it much easier for me to handle.

Again, not to get off on a HDR tangent but if I can hand hold the 21SEM in a dim cathedral for seven exposures and put them together in HDR Efex and get images like this then the lens is fast enough for me.

Better image quality, the reviews are quite impressive, also the mtf curves are unusually good for such a wide angle lens.
