Deliberate1 Posted January 15, 2012 Share #1 Posted January 15, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looking for a simple canvas bag - simpler and plainer the better. Shoulder slung style. Big enough to take a camera insert. Basically, the simpler and most ignorable the better. No "camera bags" need apply. I am thinking, like, more army surplus type. Thanks David

In fact, beyond the camera stuff I use all Austrian sweaters and Great Coats because I live in a cold climate. Excellent.

MPerson Posted January 15, 2012 Share #4 Posted January 15, 2012 Have a look at the "Troop" brand of bags, cheap as chips, thick heavy duty canvas/duck, webbing shoulder strap and they will take a Hadley Original/Pro Insert no problem. Mine was £25 and has plenty of room. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! No BS. Only solid designs, splendid materials and top notch assembly. Just bought two Filson Cape coats this week - one for me and one for my boy. Will look into that bag. Good call. Thanks. StephenPatterson Posted January 15, 2012 Share #8 Posted January 15, 2012 I absolutely love my Wotancraft Scout bag. It's waxed canvas, which is great to repel rain. Also the top compartment zips closed and has a flap, which is wonderful for keeping "little hands" out of my bag when visiting less civilized destinations. The insert, which is removable, is the best I've ever seen. It's a completely self enclosed insert, with it's own zippered top that stows away when in use. It's great because you can remove the insert, pack it full of gear, carry it in another suitcase or bag, and carry more stuff in the Scout. I find this very handy, as I usually bring more gear than I carry at any one time (daytime, night, crowds, vistas, etc.). Construction of leather and waxed canvas, with heavy metal buckles is first class. IMHO it's the best shoulder bag going and at just over $200 a real bargain. Stephen Stephen, nice to hear from you - been a couple weeks since the infamous DigRev extravaganza. For some bizarre reason they send me cc's of emails sent to a nice lady who has also apparently been "DigRev'd." Ultimately, I found a replacement for the 50mm Summilux from a reputable dealer in England who had a lone silver one for appx $3400 - even less than DigRev's bogus price. And they sold it to me for that price even after the price hikes that would have made it $3995 US. Will be here Wednesday. Hope you find your Noctilux. Good call on the Wotan. It is gorgeous. And it has the feature I have been looking for - a zippered main compartment. I like the idea of not having to secure the flap without worrying about the contents leaving on their own, or with help. How is the wax coating? Many who have it on the Domke 803 complain that it comes off on your hands. Does the bag have a long exterior pocket on the back side, for documents? Does not look like it does. Figured I'd ask. Strap looks quite comfortable, with the curved leather piece. How is the tanning on and quality of the leather. This one may just be in my future. Thanks for the suggestion. David

Thanks..David The Troop website says they will ship worldwide, dependant on the cost of postage to the US it may not be cost effective for you and the only other stockists i can see are in the UK @MPerson Can you post a direct link to the bag you have as not sure from your photo, Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. David David, congrats on the 50 Summilux ASPH. I think you will really enjoy having it with you in India. As for DigitalRev, well as my mother always used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say it's best not to say anything at all", so I will take Mom's advice to heart and not call DigitalRev a bunch of worthless, shady, disreputable bait and switch wankers. Before I bought the Wotancraft Scout I used the Domke F803. Both are waxed canvas, and I've never had any problem with wax rubbing off on my hands with either bag. The Domke is an excellent bag, but I find the Scout to be of higher quality, slightly larger and I prefer the layout. I like waxed canvas for it's water protection in the inevitable downpours which I seem to find all too often. I also have a waxed canvas hat, as my thought is if I can keep my camera gear and my noggin dry, well, everything will be OK. The Scout does not have a long exterior pocket, but you can place an iPad behind the padded insert. The insert is really heavy duty, and combined with the padding of the bag itself offers outstanding protection. If you are carrying your lenses in the Leica leather pouches it's very easy to just remove the insert and gain additional cubic inches. The leather tanning is good, but it did show some wear in a few places. I hit it with some shoe polish and "wammo presto" it was good as new. The buckles and hardware on the Scout are extremely robust and well plated showing no signs of wear. I had trouble with the Domke metal buckles, as the plating wore off the D ring where the clip attached. The Wotancraft strap is the most comfortable I have ever used in a shoulder bag. Much better than the Domke. I'm on holiday in Mexico at the moment, and my Wotancraft is perfect in this hot, muggy climate. During the evening I usually carry the Ona Camps Bay backpack, as it easily holds my Gitzo as well as lenses, etc. However the majority of the time it's me and my Scout. Cheers, Stephen

philipus Posted January 16, 2012 Share #14 Posted January 16, 2012 Hi David Might be a silly suggestion but if you're just looking for a cheap bag that can take an insert shops like Gap, HM etc often have simple canvas bags for nothing. I've used an old Crumpler Wonder Weenie for years. It's very durable and has an excellent shoulder strap. It has three inside pockets. In two of these lenses fit perfectly. Plus there's a pocket on the outside (but under the lid) as well. Camera inserts would definitely fit, too, though I don't use that. Cheers Philip

Deliberate1 Posted January 16, 2012 Author Share #17 Posted January 16, 2012 Feast your eyes ! Prices pretty good too! Nice. These may not be identified as a "camera bag." But if you are walking around with a Leica hung around your neck, isn't it kind of obvious what is in that bag across your shoulder no matter what it looks like? I am thinking of getting the $.99 one and write in Magic Marker - "I am not a camera bag." That ought to do it. David
bocaburger Posted January 16, 2012 Share #18 Posted January 16, 2012 Your thoughts echo mine. Seems to me there's probably very few thieves who specialize exclusively in camera equipment, therefore any kind of bag is potentially a target of interest, since it carries something too big for the owner's pocket, and that usually translates to something of value like an iPad or a laptop. Heck even lunch is attractive if the thief is hungry I suppose if you stencil something like "Fecal Samples" or "Used Ostomy Supplies" on it that might be a deterrent...assuming every thief is literate in the language it's written in. IMHO the only real insurance against camera theft is an insurance policy. The main reason I like a cheap generic bag vs a Billingham (or a generic half-case vs a Luigi) is so that I won't be out hundreds of dollars if it gets ruined in the line of duty. But then again I have always appreciated nicely made briefcases and holdalls. Buy cheap buy, by twice as they say
