colonel Posted January 9, 2012 Share #1 Posted January 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) It seems that APS-C DSLRs will be wiped out in a few years (except perhaps for specialist ones, e.g. very high frame rate, etc.) of course it takes years for something to die, so I am not suggesting that this year it will wink out, but certainly within 5 years The G1X looks like being an awesome camera. And for its class, I see the focal length range as adequate for 90% of situations. Here is the quality/cost hirearchy as far as I can see it: 0. Nikon J1 + 10-30mm 1. Canon G1X 2. Sony Nex 7 system or Fuji X1-PRO systems 3. Leica M8/M8.2 4. Leica M9 I will get flamed leaving out M4/3s, but honestly don't see where they fit in for me. Of course if you want interchangeable lenses and the georgous build quality of the GX1 it might be compelling if you want to change lenses and will accept a drop in quality of sensor (yes, I am making assumptions about the G1X sensor, but on past performance with Canon I fully expect it to be sensational). I have commented previously that the Nikon J1 should be seen as the shark of the compact market, rather then the minow of the CSC market. I think it therefore kicks the LX5 and XZ-1 etc. into touch (same price in the UK just about). Really exciting announcements are still forthcoming with both Canon and Leica interchangeable CSCs coming in 2012 Exciting times and vindication of the low weight/compact quality route. Advertisement Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Hi colonel, Take a look here Is the G1X the final nail in the coffin of the APS-C DSLR ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 9, 2012 Share #2 Posted January 9, 2012 Sorry, this runs too far OT - Leica has no APS-C DSLR and the G1X is not a Leica - I suggest you ask this question in either the Mirrorless Forum Andreas runs or on a dedicated DSLR forum.
